In today’s world, environmental sustainability is no longer an option, it is a necessity. Climate change, pollution, and unsustainable consumption habits threaten ecosystems, biodiversity, and the well-being of future generations. Islands like the Azores, located at the intersection of oceanic and atmospheric currents, are particularly vulnerable to environmental degradation due to rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and increasing tourism pressures. At the same time, young people have proven to be one of the most proactive groups in advocating for sustainable change. However, despite their passion, many lack access to practical environmental education and structured opportunities to implement sustainable practices in their daily lives. The "Green? Win!" project aims to bridge this gap by equipping young people with the tools and knowledge needed to make an impact in their communities. This project brings together youth from across Europe to learn, share, and take action on sustainable living, waste reduction, and climate-conscious behavior. By hosting this exchange in the Azores, a European model for green tourism and conservation, we aim to inspire participants to implement eco-friendly habits, understand global environmental challenges, and create innovative sustainability initiatives that they can bring home. We want to implement this project because the urgency of environmental action is undeniable, and young people need practical knowledge and real-life inspiration to turn their commitment into action. Our key motivations include: 1. The Azores are among the European regions most affected by climate change due to: rising sea levels threatening coastal ecosystems and marine biodiversity (European Environment Agency, 2024). More frequent and intense storms, affecting local communities and infrastructures (IPCC Report, 2023). Pollution and over-tourism, leading to habitat destruction and waste accumulation (World Tourism Organization, 2023). With global temperatures rising, the need to equip youth with practical sustainability knowledge has never been greater. By carrying out this project, we will empower young people to develop green habits, reduce waste, and advocate for better environmental policies in their countries. 2. A UNDP Youth and Environment Report (2023) found that 67% of young people feel passionate about fighting climate change, but only 35% feel equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills. Many youths are eager to make a difference, but they are not involved in decision-making on environmental issues, they lack access to real-life sustainability education outside of academic settings, they don’t know how to integrate zero-waste and green habits into daily life. The Green? Win! project will fill this gap by providing hands-on experiences in sustainable practises, waste management, and eco-friendly living. By bringing youth to the Azores, they will see firsthand how a region balances conservation and development, motivating them to apply these lessons at home. 3. Sustainability is a global challenge that requires international cooperation. Different countries have developed unique approaches to waste reduction, energy efficiency, and climate adaptation. This project will encourage the exchange of best practices between countries leading in zero-waste strategies and those still developing them. Showcase real-life solutions. Create a youth-led sustainability network, allowing participants to continue working together long after the exchange. By bringing together young leaders from different countries, we can ensure that sustainability efforts do not stop at national borders but rather become a shared mission across Europe. The Green? Win! project aims to: - Teach practical green habits like waste sorting, saving energy, and reducing plastic use. - Raise awareness about climate change and its impact on ecosystems. - Encourage youth-led initiatives to promote sustainable living in their home countries. - Foster international cooperation by sharing best practices in environmental protection. - Inspire long-term change by equipping young people with the knowledge and confidence to take action.
