Objectives

The project “Youth – A Voice for Change” was developed in response to a current issue – the low participation of young people in political and civic processes, especially in elections. The need for the project was justified both by statistical data from the Central Election Commission and by studies on youth civic participation in Latvia. For example, only 25.92% of eligible voters participated in the 2021 Rēzekne municipality elections, while citizens aged 18 to 24 were among the least active voter groups. Through daily communication with their peers both in and outside the school environment, the project initiators – the youth management team – observed young people’s lack of interest in political processes, low trust in politicians, and a belief that the voices of young people are unable to influence what happens in society. Taking this into account, the aim of the project was to engage and involve young people from the Rēzekne region, including young people with fewer opportunities, in political and civic processes by providing them with knowledge about democracy, the electoral process, political participation and critical thinking. Special attention was given to developing young people’s ability to analyse political information, evaluate the proposals of candidates and political parties, and recognise disinformation and fake news. Several interconnected objectives were defined within the project: to promote young people’s understanding of the importance of democracy and the impact of elections on the development of society, to strengthen civic competences, and to motivate young people to participate more actively in civic and social processes. The project also focused on developing cooperation, communication and critical thinking skills through non-formal education methods and the “peer-to-peer” approach. An important part of the target group consisted of young people from rural areas, who often have fewer opportunities to participate in civic engagement activities due to limited transport accessibility, lack of information or socio-economic factors. The project activities were adapted to the needs and opportunities of the participants, ensuring an inclusive and youth-friendly environment. The project aimed not only to provide theoretical knowledge about political processes, but also to create practical experiences where young people could actively participate, discuss, simulate election processes and meet decision-makers. The long-term intention of the project was to strengthen young people’s understanding of their role in a democratic society and motivate them to continue participating in civic activities and elections in the future.
