Through this project, our goal is to help create resilient and sustainable communities that can better face challenges like climate change and environmental degradation. We want to empower young people by giving them the knowledge, skills, and tools to make a meaningful impact on their communities. The youth exchange program, Green Communities, is designed to be a platform where young people can come together to learn, share, and collaborate on ideas that contribute to a greener and more connected future. From a youth work perspective, here’s how we plan to achieve this: 1. Understanding Resilience and Green Communities: We want to help young people understand what it truly means to build resilient and green communities. This involves exploring real-life examples and proven strategies from different parts of the world. By learning from these success stories, participants will be able to apply similar approaches back home, creating sustainable and adaptable communities. 2. Encouraging Active Participation: Youth have the energy and fresh perspectives to drive change, and we want to help them channel that into meaningful action. For example, in Türkiye, youth participation in community projects increased by 18% when given proper opportunities (Turkish Statistical Institute, 2023). By involving participants in this project, we aim to spark similar engagement, inspire leadership, and encourage them to take ownership of their communities' growth. 3. Fostering Mental Well-being Through Community Connections: Being part of a community has a profound impact on mental health. In Italy, studies have shown that strong family support promotes positive mental well-being among adolescents. Conversely, low social support and high school stress negatively affect their mental health. In Romania, isolated young people are 22% more likely to face mental health challenges (European Commission, 2022). This project aims to strengthen these connections and provide young people with the support they need to thrive, emotionally and mentally. 4. Promoting Cross-Cultural Learning: Bringing together young people from different countries creates a unique opportunity for cross-cultural exchange. By sharing experiences and learning from one another, participants will gain fresh ideas and perspectives on building resilient and sustainable communities. Beyond that, this exchange helps to break down barriers, creating a sense of global solidarity and understanding among youth. 5. Building Practical Skills for the Future: We want to ensure participants leave this program with tangible skills they can use in their personal lives and communities. Through hands-on workshops and activities, they’ll learn about environmental sustainability, community organizing, and leadership. These practical tools will prepare them to tackle challenges with confidence, now and in the future. 6. Ensuring Long-term Impact: Lastly, we aim to create an impact that lasts far beyond this project. We plan to develop resources, such as video interviews and educational materials, that can continue to inspire and educate others. By fostering strong networks among participants and partners, we’re laying the groundwork for ongoing collaboration and support in the years to come. Ultimately, Green Communities is about empowering young people to lead the way toward a more sustainable, connected, and resilient future.
