This project initiative is the result of a long and inspiring journey with a small group of Dutch and international youngsters. Over the past couple of years, these people have created a series of outdoor adventures with our support - all focused on learning and cooperation. What made these activities unique was the chance to create and initiate within a group setting - while the exact topics were always different, the approach was the same: each person had the opportunity to shine (through different roles and activities). This worked as a magnet - the participants had ideas and they were on fire when they figured out how to put these into practice, they were connecting, and while living together and dealing with different situations together, they got even closer (they shared their weaknesses, their thoughts, and they encouraged each other). The possibility to create for and together with others brought movement (and this is still key when it comes to their motivation). People in our network started to invite others while bringing in their ideas and colors - and this is also the way this initiative was born. The youngsters behind this project application have met through the above-mentioned experiences. As they got enthusiastic, they decided to offer something similar to other youngsters (and themselves), based on the needs that they had and noticed. Looking at their own experiences (and at the experiences around them), they noticed a growing need to become more self-sustainable - while a lot of young people are focused on their academic course and on their ability to create results, they also need skills to handle real-life challenges (they lack specific skills for adulthood and employment). They need additional activities through which they can play and explore, activities through which they can test their boundaries and discover their strengths - all this within a community that feeds and supports them. This need is even stronger among young people who come from difficult backgrounds (facing social exclusion, financial troubles, or disruptions in their families). There is often a lack of self-esteem and a deeply rooted urge to rely on others. In an effort to enrich the existing youth work practices, they decided to create a learning project that offers a transition into adulthood - a series of learning activities that encourage young people to think for themselves, find solutions, and work within a team through hands-on, interactive experiences (in nature). The project itself consists of a few activities: - preparation period with online and physical meetings and preparation assignments in national and international groups; - an online preparatory meeting for the entire international project community; - an exchange event in the Netherlands through which young people can develop their life skills while creating and joining various outdoor adventures and activities; - a follow-up period with local events and dissemination actions. To narrow the focus of this project, we created the following general aims: - involving 54 young participants (including group leaders) between the ages of 18 and 25 in engaging national and international activities focused on self-sustainability (based on experiential learning and outdoor education); - supporting these people to improve their life skills; - hosting one adventurous exchange program through which they can all come together and exchange various activities; - creating engagement in the local communities through dynamic community events.
