Objectives

The concept of the project WAMA Script Academy emerged from meetings and discussions among young people who envision their future in the film industry. The initiative group consists of young filmmakers - primarily aspiring screenwriters, directors, and creative producers - who met at the WAMA Film Festival, where they participated in a series of educational events aimed at the emerging film industry. Through a series of industry meetings and workshops with experienced specialists in film production and distribution, these young people identified several key issues that pose significant challenges for emerging European filmmakers entering the film industry and greatly limit their opportunities for creative development: 1. The European film market is dominated by large Hollywood studios, and there is insufficient creative exchange between individual European countries. 2. National film industries dedicate too little attention and resources to developing effective programs that not only nurture young talent but also facilitate young filmmakers' entry into the audiovisual market. 3. Young filmmakers have limited knowledge about the possibilities for international collaboration and the European mechanisms that support their artistic development. Moreover, there is a lack of educational centers offering this type of training. The group of young people strongly believed that addressing the educational needs related to international collaboration among novice filmmakers in Europe required a different structure - specifically, a non-formal education program aimed at exchanging experiences that would provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for their future creative development in the European film market. Leveraging the annual autumn meetings of young filmmakers from around the world in Olsztyn, the group proposed the WAMA Script Academy project - a unique international youth exchange program designed for young European screenwriters, directors, and creative producers. This initiative focuses on modern methods of working on film projects and implementing new ecological standards for audiovisual production in Europe, refering to a methodological approach to filmmaking that minimizes the negative impact on the environment. The project will center on peer-to-peer education among novice filmmakers, facilitating the exchange of experiences and fostering collaboration between young debutants from various European countries. In planning their venture, the group decided to prioritize finding innovative and pioneering ways to exchange knowledge and experience regarding the modern processes of developing film projects, as well as the creative production practices supported by European cinematography in the context of nurturing young talent. They concluded that creating a European platform for collaboration among young filmmakers could serve as a genuine space for growth, providing the momentum to transcend the limitations imposed by the national film industries. The participants view transnational activities as part of European cooperation not only as the future of their individual careers but also as the future of European cinema. Each participant, by sharing their experience and knowledge, will contribute to enhancing the project's multicultural nature. This grassroots initiative, created by young people to fuel their passion, will provide a true developmental boost to young European cinema. The program, designed as part of the project, will offer participants practical experience and insights into the process of building a film project, emphasizing not only the artistic value of the project but also its production and distribution potential. This undertaking will allow young filmmakers to exchange ideas in the field of creative production and help them understand the modern process of developing a film project, which contrasts with the traditional producer-creator hierarchy. Instead, it promotes a partnership where young filmmakers form creative teams of directors and screenwriters who work together on original film projects. The participants intend for the project to contribute not only to the development of their knowledge and experience in new models of film production but also to foster artistic passion, motivation, and intercultural awareness, thereby strengthening European dialogue among young filmmakers. The project will help them navigate the European market more effectively and enable thoughtful artistic collaboration, aligning with the objectives of educational mobility under the ERASMUS+ Programme.
