The desire to realise a youth educators' meeting was taken up by an international group of youth workers, who jointly realized several international youth exchanges between 2023 and 2024. The project ‘PHOTOsynthesis: (re)connection’ is the result of several youth exchanges implemented by the Eastern Theatre Foundation - ‘(re)connection’ in Poronin in June 2023 with partners from Italy and Finland, ‘PHOTOsynthesis’ in August 2023 in Bytom with partners from Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania and Finland, and ‘PHOTOsynthesis: local identities’ also in Bytom in August 2024 with partners from Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Italy. These projects were highly successful, as confirmed by the participants. In addition, the photo exchange projects on the cultural heritage of Upper Silesia also had a very strong impact on the local community. n this project, which is intended to be a seminar for youth workers from many countries, we want to take the time to share the educational tools and methods we have developed, mainly based on photography, which, on the one hand, is easily accessible due to the widespread possession of mobile phones with built-in cameras, but on the other hand, it is only by focusing on familiarising ourselves with the basic principles and techniques of photography that we can appreciate and make the most of a tool that everyone has in their pocket. Photography today is one of the most democratic arts, available at your fingertips, which also does not require years of training. Half of the partners invited to participate in the project are organisations that have taken part in youth meetings in Bytom. We are pleased that they have responded to our invitation and this shows that they too feel the need to gather and summarise their work to date, the methods developed, their evaluation and their further development. We are also inviting new organisations to the project with whom we have worked on other projects or whose representatives we have met recently. The second aim, apart from sharing and developing educational tools based on photography, we want to devote space during the meeting to reflect on the work ethics of youth workers, how to deal with participants with special educational needs or special situations. We want to learn about good practices from different countries and reflect on which ones can be adapted to our local conditions. We want to spend time reflecting on the mental condition of educators themselves, who in a rapidly changing world have to be specialists in ADHD, eating disorders, depression, social anxiety, working with people with migration and refugee experiences and many other challenges for which they are simply not prepared and cannot expect help from anywhere. In our educational work at a local level with 15-25 year olds, we are seeing an exponential increase in the number of participants with special needs, who require us to have specialised knowledge of their mental or physical health situation and how to deal with each of these cases. It is also the easiest way to abandon the mission of facilitating young people, which is fast becoming beyond anyone's strength and ability. We see an opportunity to combine attentiveness to the well-being of both facilitators and participants with educational methods based on photography workshops, which allow for simultaneous action individually and as a member of a group, require attention to detail and thus allow for a natural state of relaxation, self-realisation and self-expression through such an attractive and super-easy to disseminate tool as photography. A side topic we want to address is related to the following observation. Educators who have a lot of experience working with young people are not always able to promote their own brand in order to win new commissions and negotiate favourable rates for themselves. Therefore, one of the outcomes of the meeting will be the creation of a digital atlas with portraits of youth workers from different countries, who will present their experience, their interests and where they work in it. In this way, we want to support the educators, recognise their achievements and strengthen their self-esteem. Make it easy for them to send attractive materials to their principals to promote their work, which will help them negotiate better rates and thus improve their own quality of life. The third pillar of the meeting is the development of competences in environmental education. We have different standards in different European countries, and in the face of the challenges of climate change, we need to join forces to combat the threats. Therefore, it is very important to awaken environmental awareness and equip the participants - the educators - with the right educational tools. In the future, we hope to develop this project and invite more people to join.
