Synergia Açores, the promoting organisation of this project, was an organisation with a strong commitment to promoting non-formal education, active citizenship, and environmental sustainability, especially among young people. Located on Terceira Island in the Azores, Synergia Açores acted as a transformative agent in the development of initiatives that valued local culture and the environment. This project brought together six countries in the consortium: Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy, Romania, and Lithuania, reflecting cultural diversity and the sharing of European perspectives. Together, the 42 participants, including young people and team leaders, collaborated to address common challenges related to the sustainability of water resources and the preservation of aquatic ecosystems. The project “Waves of Change” emerged as a response to the excessive exploitation of water resources and the growing pollution of aquatic ecosystems, issues that affected not only Terceira Island but also communities worldwide. Pressure on marine and freshwater resources was aggravated by unsustainable consumption practices, lack of environmental awareness, and inadequate waste management. These challenges, in addition to harming biodiversity, threatened ecological balance and the quality of life of populations. In this context, “Waves of Change” aimed to empower young people to create innovative and sustainable approaches to aquatic resource management, promoting the concept of the blue circular economy. Over eight days, from 28 October to 4 November 2025, project participants worked in teams to develop practical and replicable solutions, culminating in the creation of the final tool “Circles of Blue Impact.” This tool consisted of six blue circular economy projects, developed in multinational groups and designed to be applied or adapted in different European communities. Project activities combined theoretical and practical learning, study visits, group dynamics, and interactive sessions, fostering the exchange of knowledge, skills, and good practices. Praia da Vitória, located on Terceira Island, has a strong connection to the ocean and water resources, being an area rich in biodiversity and with a community that depends on the sea for various economic activities. However, the preservation of these resources was an increasing challenge. Synergia Açores, together with local partners such as the Municipality of Praia da Vitória, OMA, Ocean Emotion, Resiaçores, and Montanheiros, worked on initiatives promoting environmental sustainability and raising awareness among the local population. Implementing this project in this locality strengthened the connection between participating young people and the practical realities of conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The main objectives of “Waves of Change” included: Raising awareness among young people about the importance of responsible use of water resources and the preservation of aquatic ecosystems; Empowering participants to create and implement blue circular economy projects, promoting innovation and impact in their local communities; Fostering cultural exchange and international cooperation among European youth, strengthening the sense of active citizenship and solidarity. The project “Waves of Change” aligned with the priorities of the Erasmus+ Programme and the National Agency, particularly in the priority areas of social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and active citizenship. It promoted non-formal education as a means of youth empowerment, addressing topics such as climate change, circular economy, and sustainable resource management. Furthermore, it contributed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by integrating them into the project’s actions and methodologies, and reinforced European cohesion through intercultural dialogue and the creation of collaborative networks among young people from different countries. In summary, the project “Waves of Change” was an initiative that directly addressed global challenges related to the sustainability of water resources, combining non-formal education, international cooperation, and innovation. By equipping young participants with practical tools and knowledge, it promoted not only environmental awareness but also the implementation of concrete and replicable solutions in their communities. This unique experience contributed to the personal and social development of young people, reinforcing European values of solidarity, sustainability, and inclusion, while creating a lasting impact at both local and global levels.
