The Green Goals project has been a long-standing ambition for us, the young people of Murça, active members of the SYnergia Vila Real association. The reality faced by our youth community has prompted both individual and collective reflection on an issue of critical importance: climate change. SYnergia Vila Real places great value on environmental protection and climate action, and has a history of promoting these principles through workshops in local primary and secondary schools, as well as at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD). We recognize a gap in knowledge and awareness among young people regarding environmental issues and the consequences of unsustainable practices. This aligns with Portugal’s commitment to climate targets aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Decarbonisation of the economy and society presents significant opportunities while preparing the country for future competitiveness challenges. Within the Climate Transition framework, six strategic intervention areas have been identified: the sea, sustainable mobility, industrial decarbonisation, the bioeconomy, energy efficiency in buildings, and renewable energies. Regarding the principle of climate integration, Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) has allocated 38% of its total investment to climate transition objectives, meeting the established threshold. We firmly believe that this youth exchange will make a substantial contribution to young people across Europe, positively impacting all consortium members and their communities, with particular benefits for the youth of Murça. Although the exchange will directly involve 42 participants from six countries, its influence is expected to extend far beyond this group. Our clear objective is for the knowledge and skills acquired during the project to be shared widely with the broader European youth population. After careful reflection and discussions within SYnergia Vila Real, we began identifying partner organizations to create the most effective consortium for a project of this scale. Partners were selected based on their active involvement in promoting climate transition within their communities and their commitment to raising awareness among young people. In addition, we sought a mix of associations with extensive experience in youth exchanges and others with less experience, ensuring the effective dissemination of ideas. Collaboration between organizations of varying experience levels fosters synergy, innovation, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and the development of diverse skills, strengthening the project as a whole. The Green Goals project is designed to address the problem outlined above, with several specific objectives. Its primary aim is to raise awareness among young participants about climate change, empowering them with the tools to disseminate knowledge and ideas in their home communities. Participants will acquire essential skills to continue tackling climate issues locally and nationally, while simultaneously developing personal and social competencies through group activities and intercultural learning. This is a project by young people, for young people, emphasizing that youth are both the future of our planet and key drivers of change towards a more informed and environmentally conscious society. The project’s principles and objectives align closely with the Erasmus+ Programme, particularly in fostering skills development and sustainability. Environmental awareness and climate transition are strategic priorities for the European Union, and the implementation of this project represents a tangible contribution to these goals. Through practical experiences and non-formal education methodologies, Green Goals will empower young Europeans to develop sensitivity, commitment, and active engagement in addressing pressing environmental challenges.
