The emergence of this project resulted from the identification of a problem, mainly in the promoting country, by a group of young people involved in this youth association. We, the young people, after reflecting on this issue, came to the conclusion that the excessive use of fossil fuels and certain inadequate means of transport had radically harmed our quality of life and the society living in Freixo de Espada à Cinta. Following this consideration, we decided, together with the youth association Juventude à Cinta, to contact consortium countries with the aim of identifying associations that actively cared about this issue, as this would allow the project to be developed more effectively and with greater commitment to its implementation and subsequent dissemination. After discussions and contact with the respective associations, it was agreed that Footura would be included, as it defended similar objectives and carried out various activities connected with cultural tourism and the promotion of an active and healthy lifestyle, targeting young people and individuals facing disadvantages in their lives compared to others. The inclusion of the youth association Municipality of Catral (Spain) was also important, as it demonstrated a daily commitment within its community and country towards planetary sustainability and the adoption of measures to change daily habits in a positive way. Finally, it was decided to select three further associations from Europe which, due to their geographical location and traditions, were less accustomed to raising awareness about this issue and promoting behavioural change. These included Wiele Możliwości (Poland), ARC (Romania), and Eco Youth Alliance (Serbia). The reason for choosing these countries was that they were less familiar with this discussion and, at the same time, we aimed to include associations with both greater and lesser experience on the topic, so that they could begin implementing projects and dissemination activities within their local communities. The “Save the World” project was based on the problems described above and pursued several clear and concrete objectives. Firstly, the main target groups were young people and the partner associations mentioned, as they represented the next active generations and those most capable of influencing whether this issue would persist or be addressed. The project focused on raising awareness that change was necessary within our society and on identifying the behaviours and practices that were harming our well-being, ranging from individual actions to more industrialised activities. Following this identification, various methods and approaches were presented to help redirect the path our planet was taking. Through all these actions, the project aimed to develop a wide range of skills, particularly related to the theme described, but also at a personal and community level. The objectives of the “Save the World” project were to raise awareness among young people and the general public about the excessive use of fossil fuels and certain means of transport, whose inadequate conditions had been significantly damaging the quality of life and the society living in Freixo de Espada à Cinta. We also sought to provide information about actions that could be taken to encourage social participation in environmental protection, the rational use of natural resources, and the search for solutions to the environmental problems faced by our society. The young people involved in the promoting association Juventude à Cinta came from Freixo de Espada à Cinta, a town located in the north of Portugal that was less developed compared to the large coastal cities. For this reason, these young people needed a significant change from the environment that had surrounded them for many years, and which had also shaped the lives of their parents. Due to the clear differences they experienced, they felt that action was necessary and agreed that creating a Youth Exchange project would be the most effective way to raise awareness of the problem and generate productive ideas for changing attitudes, while also reaching other countries and communities and sharing this knowledge across Europe. After conducting research, these young people confirmed that creating such a project would be an excellent solution because, according to the Erasmus+ Youth Quality Standards, one of the main priorities concerned environmental sustainability and the promotion of responsible behaviour towards the planet, which clearly aligned with the primary objectives of the young participants from Bragança. As advocated by the Erasmus+ Programme and its objectives, environmental and climate action were fundamental priorities for the European Union and would continue to be so in the future. Therefore, we believed that the development of the “Save the World” project would be extremely positive for sustaining these ideas and for promoting the development of skills and strategies.
