Model European Union Lisbon 2025 (MEU Lisbon 2025) was designed to empower young people by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage in democratic life. Through a simulation of the EU decision-making process, the project aimed to make European politics more accessible while equipping participants with key civic and professional competences. At a time of increasing political polarization and a widespread sense of disconnection between citizens and EU institutions, the project sought to bridge the gap between young people and the European Union. Many perceive EU politics as distant, overly technical, or relevant only to specialists. This disengagement, combined with limited opportunities for practical civic learning, reinforces a lack of participation. MEU Lisbon 2025 responded by offering an inclusive, hands-on educational experience that demystified EU institutions and encouraged active European citizenship. The primary objectives were to raise awareness of EU governance, foster democratic participation, and strengthen critical thinking and informed dialogue among young people across Europe. The project also placed strong emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility. It aimed to reduce financial, social, and geographical barriers that often prevent young people, especially those from rural or disadvantaged backgrounds, from taking part in international educational activities. Participation was open to students from all disciplinary areas, helping challenge the misconception that EU affairs concern only those studying politics or law. A central goal was to create a multicultural environment where participants from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds could engage in intercultural exchange, build mutual understanding, and develop a deeper appreciation of Europe’s diversity. Working together in committees allowed participants to learn about different political cultures and perspectives and to cultivate tolerance and open-mindedness. The simulation format also encouraged empathy and reflection. By assuming specific political roles, sometimes representing views different from their own, participants developed the ability to listen to opposing arguments and understand alternative viewpoints. This exercise strengthened critical empathy and contributed to a culture of respectful dialogue and pluralism. Beyond the participant experience, MEU Lisbon 2025 was also transformative for the young organisers. Managing the project from preparation to implementation allowed the team to develop competencies such as event planning, coordination, project management, communication, leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. These experiences strengthened BETA Portugal as a youth organisation by expanding its internal capacity and providing hands-on training for future leaders. The project aligned with several European Youth Goals and EU Youth Dialogue priorities, including: (1) Connecting EU with Youth, by providing an engaging introduction to EU policymaking; (2) Inclusive Societies, by reducing participation barriers; (3) Information and Constructive Dialogue, through activities supporting media literacy and fact-based debate; (4) Space and Participation for All, by creating a structured platform for youth engagement; (5) Sustainable Green Europe, through the adoption of eco-friendly organisational practices; (6) Youth Organisations and European Programmes, by strengthening BETA Portugal and promoting collaboration with partner organisations. Through these dimensions, MEU Lisbon 2025 contributed directly to the objectives of the Erasmus+ Programme, particularly within Youth Participation Activities. It promoted active citizenship, strengthened European values, encouraged youth involvement in democratic life, and built lasting connections between young people and European initiatives. Ultimately, the project aimed to raise understanding of EU institutions through experiential learning; to develop transferable skills such as negotiation, communication, and critical thinking; to promote inclusivity and accessibility; to challenge misconceptions about who EU politics concerns; to foster long-term engagement; and to reinforce European identity and solidarity. By achieving these aims, MEU Lisbon 2025 helped build a generation of young Europeans who are better informed, more confident, and committed to democracy and cooperation.
