The young people of Chaves are geographically, socially and politically isolated. They have very few opportunities for education and personal development, for contact with other worlds and visions, for access to a stimulating social, cultural and intellectual offer and, consequently, a very low sense of initiative, resourcefulness, entrepreneurial spirit and ability to turn their ideas into plans and action. They live in a very closed and traditional context, immune to what is going on outside, which judges everything that is new and different and in a constant sense of disadvantage compared to youth in the rest of the country, feeling that all the treatment, access and opportunities available to Portuguese youth will never reach them. In particular, the ones we work with are youth who have very little contact with the outside world, a profound lack of knowledge about Europe, the EU, its institutions, its functioning and the programs available to all young Europeans equally, as well as about the importance and the construction process of democracy and the history, culture, traditions and ways of life of other European regions and cultures. Many, lost in villages in the middle of the mountains, have never left the region, never travel and would never have thought of embarking on a journey of discovery, empowerment and personal development on their own. We work with these young people every day to guarantee their education, active participation and equal opportunities, but the obstacles are clear. It's very difficult to talk about citizenship, sustainable mobility and equal opportunities when the first time these young people ride a train is when they move to study on the seaside cities. The 20 young people involved in this project come from a background with clear fewer opportunities than their peers, suffering from very profound geographical, economic, social and educational obstacles, mostly are from isolated villages in Trás-os-Montes, study professional courses, are from poor and very traditional families and from a minority that is very discriminated against locally, due to its rural and working-class background. They are the children of a low-schooling agricultural working class that is very conservative and averse to this kind of openness to the outside world. These are young people who, for the most part, have never left the country, have never flown and know very little about Europe and its various cultures, as well as about the EU, how it works and the opportunities they can access as full European citizens. We want to create a new hope, an opening up of mentalities and a sense of future possibilities accessible from Chaves, we want to create new trains of the future for these young people, where they embark in search of the learning and development that they have never had, where they educate themselves through contact, exposure and interaction with other worlds, cultures and realities, where they believe that they can be the ones returning home and leading the change of reality in our region and where they gain the knowledge, skills and experience to be able to create their own space in our city and in an European Union that is also theirs. Thus, the main objectives of this project are: - To create opportunities for mobility, empowerment and informal and non-formal learning for young people who would never have access to this type of program on their own; - Promote the participation, inclusion and active involvement in the local community life of young people from discriminated groups and at risk of social exclusion; - Promote the discussion and learning of topics relevant to social inclusion, the improvement of future prospects and the personal and professional development of these young people; - Empower these young people with the knowledge, tools and attitudes to be the ones to create change in our local society; - Dismantling stereotypes and cultural prejudices, increasing our young people's respect, tolerance, understanding and receptiveness to other cultures and realities; - Stimulate a sense of European citizenship in the local community, a perception of our position in the EU, of all the rights, opportunities and role as young European citizens. This project will consist of 4 mobility activities, in groups of 5 young people from underprivileged backgrounds and an accompanying person to support them on their journey. Each group will have a different educational theme, which they will explore during their trip, with an itinerary designed accordingly, a list of places to visit and things to learn and an program of activities in each city to facilitate their learning.
