The “EYC for Democracy” will provide young people with fewer opportunities with a transformative international mobility experience. With its focus on civic engagement, active citizenship, and democratic values, the project is in line with European Youth Goals, EU youth work policy, and Sustainable Development Goals and explicitly responds to the objectives of the DiscoverEU Inclusion Action. The main aim of the project is to provide young individuals from Fundão, a geographically isolated rural area with a international mobility experience that will allow them to earn skills, knowledge, and tools to be active citizens, actors in democratic life and civic engaged members of the society. By eliminating financial and geographical obstacles, the project provides young individuals who would not apply on their own initiative the chance of international mobility. Through non-formal education activities, peer led discussions, and civic participation experiences in six European cities will equip participants with practical tools to be active citizens and reinforce their EU sense of belonging. The project addresses EYG #1 (Connecting the EU with Youth), EYG #3 (Inclusive Societies), and EYG #9 (Space and Participation for All) by fostering youth participation, inclusion, and equal access to opportunities. One of the main problems this project solves is the lack of mobility experiences for young people from Fundão. Due to financial and geographical constraints, most have never traveled outside of their country, limiting their access to other cultures, perspectives, and youth involvement practices. 75% of the selected participants will be traveling abroad for the first time, ensuring that this experience directly benefits those who need it most. The project reinforces the DiscoverEU objective of targeting fewer opportunities youth by actively recruiting participants from schools and the Migration Center of Fundão, in order to have a heterogeneous and inclusive group. Participants are guided with an mentoring program, reducing fears, and developing confidence in independent travel. The project also tackles the issue of low youth participation in democratic and civic life by exposing participants to real-world examples of youth-led movements, activism, and participatory democracy. By visiting 3 past European Youth Capitals, participants will see firsthand how young people have effectively influenced policy and been involved in decision-making. They will acquire fundamental civic competences through workshops, simulations, and peer discussions, in which they discover how to be change-makers in their own communities. These activities are framed in EU youth work policy, which seeks to enable young people to become active citizens and actors of democratic life through participation opportunities of high quality. Intercultural learning constitutes the second fundamental component of the project. By visiting various parts of Europe, the participants will be able to see for themselves the difference between the civic realities of Western and Eastern Europe, appreciating political and social diversity more intensely. This kind of exposure stimulates intercultural communication, diminishes stereotypes, and paves the way toward more cohesive societies, reestablishing the vision of EYG #3. The project also addresses SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by offering a chance for fewer opportunity youngsters to be involved in European mobility schemes and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the offer of non-formal learning opportunities. Sustainability is a cross-cutting theme of the project that addresses SDG 13 (Climate Action) and EYG #10 (Sustainable Green Europe). The mobility is planned with sustainable transportation and promoting environmental stewardship through workshop sessions. The participants will be challenged to embrace green practices, inculcating in them an environmentally friendly mindset that will go beyond the project. The project's impact will reach beyond the participants. They will organize a dissemination activity, "Fundão DiscoverEU Day,". The activity will be the platform to share their experience, showcase project outcomes, and bring EU opportunities to at least 50 youth from Fundão. In this manner, the project ensures DiscoverEU's benefits to extend to a growing number of individuals and have a lasting effect on the local community. The participants will be motivated to stay involved in youth activities, as ambassadors of European mobility programs and of active citizenship. The structure of the project, from preparation to follow-up, is based on Erasmus+ Youth Quality Standards in a way to provide a well-structured and high-impact experience for fewer opportunity youth. Through the building of a feeling of EU belongingness, and empower participants with tools for civic engagement the project allows young people to become contributing agents in society and strengthens the connection between the youth and the EU.
