Objectives

We aim to implement this project to foster understanding and tolerance towards migrants, addressing the significant social and cultural challenges they face, while highlighting the impact of migration on host countries. Recent migration trends, particularly in Germany, underscore the pressing need to promote awareness and integration. For Germany, According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), Germany registered 213,499 asylum applications in 2024, a 34% decrease from the previous year. Despite this decline, the country continues to host a substantial number of migrants from various regions. These individuals often encounter challenges such as discrimination, language barriers, and limited access to resources.reuters.com Cyprus has experienced a significant influx of migrants relative to its population size. In the second quarter of 2024, Cyprus had the highest number of asylum applications per capita among EU countries, with 0.3% of its population seeking asylum. This surge has placed considerable pressure on the country's social services, particularly in areas like healthcare, education, and housing.dtm.iom.int Spain has become a major destination for migrants, especially those crossing the Mediterranean. In 2024, over 57,700 migrants reached Spain by boat, a 12% increase from the previous year. However, the journey is perilous; more than 10,000 migrants died attempting to reach Spain by sea in the same year. Those who arrive face significant integration challenges, including discrimination, housing shortages, and limited job opportunities. apnews.com Turkey plays a crucial role in managing migration, serving as a bridge between Europe and Asia. As of 2023, Turkey hosts approximately 4 million refugees, mainly from Syria, but has also seen an increase in migrants from Ukraine and African countries. These individuals face challenges such as access to housing, employment, education, and social services. Romania shares a border with Ukraine, making it a crucial transit and host country for Ukrainian refugees. As of late 2022, the Romanian government reported hosting around 100,000 Ukrainian refugees, many of whom are women and children. Romania has provided humanitarian aid, temporary protection, and support services to these refugees, although challenges remain regarding long-term integration. Serbia has been a key transit country for migrants traveling along the Balkan route. The country has faced challenges in providing adequate reception conditions and integration support for migrants and refugees. Issues such as overcrowded facilities, limited access to services, and social tensions have been reported. Young people in these countries face several challenges, regardless of their migrant background. However, those with a migrant background often encounter additional difficulties due to cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic differences. Key challenges include: Language Barriers: Limited proficiency in the local language affects their ability to integrate into schools, access higher education, and participate in the job market. Discrimination and Xenophobia: Migrant youth, particularly from African and Middle Eastern backgrounds, face discrimination and xenophobia. They may experience bullying in schools, prejudice in social settings, and unequal treatment in employment. Cultural and Religious Differences: In countries like Turkey and Spain, cultural and religious differences sometimes lead to social exclusion, affecting the self-esteem and mental well-being of young migrants. Identity and Belonging: Migrant youth frequently experience challenges related to cultural identity and belonging. They often navigate between their family's cultural background and the culture of the host country, which can lead to identity conflicts and feelings of being "caught between two worlds." Similar challenges are faced by Roma migrants across Europe and within the partner countries. Given these dynamics, our project aims to address the critical issues of integration and acceptance by raising awareness about the diverse experiences of migrants. We seek to educate the younger generation about the importance of cultural diversity and the need for tolerance. Our objectives include: Raising awareness among the 36 participants about the migration crisis and the phenomenon of hate speech, which has been affecting Europe in recent years. Increasing understanding and acceptance of cultural, religious, and social differences of the 36 participants emphasizing that diversity is a fundamental value of European identity. Encouraging the 36 participants to take concrete actions against hate speech and the defamation of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. By implementing this project, we aim to contribute to a more inclusive society where migrants are recognized as valuable members of the community.
