Objectives

The overarching goal of the "ArtConnect - Inclusion Through Creativity" project was to revolutionize the youth work landscape by providing youth workers with an immersive, transformative experience that integrates art as a potent catalyst for social inclusion. Implemented in Hârșova, Romania, this international initiative brought together 25 youth workers from Romania, Spain, Estonia, Bulgaria, and Poland with the aim of equipping them with a comprehensive toolkit of non-formal education methods steeped in artistic practices to effectively engage with and empower marginalized youth. To achieve this vision, the project focused heavily on skill enhancement for inclusive practices, providing participants with hands-on instruction and practical guidance on integrating art-based activities into their existing youth work initiatives. This encompassed a diverse range of creative techniques, from visual arts like PhotoVoice and collage to performing arts such as Forum Theatre, Living Library, and storytelling. By mastering these techniques, the youth workers gained the vital ability to facilitate safe, supportive, and expressive spaces where marginalized youth can voice their experiences and challenge existing societal norms. In parallel, the project aimed to construct a collaborative, tangible toolkit and booklet consisting of tested and readily adaptable non-formal education methods rooted in art. This resource was designed to provide step-by-step instructions, examples, tips, and adaptation strategies to ensure accessibility and replicability across diverse local contexts once the participants returned to their respective communities and organizations. A core pillar of the methodology was dedicated to confidence building and increasing the self-efficacy of the participants. Through guided practice, real-world facilitation in front of local youth, mentorship, and constructive feedback, the project sought to instill a deep sense of empowerment in the youth workers, inspiring them to become proactive champions of inclusion within their communities. Furthermore, the project offered practical guidance and theoretical frameworks for seamlessly integrating art into educational programs and youth initiatives, allowing participants to explore effective strategies for designing and facilitating activities that leverage the power of art to address complex social issues like stereotypes and discrimination while promoting a greater understanding of diversity. Finally, recognizing the wealth of knowledge and experience within the partner organizations, the initiative was designed to cultivate a dynamic learning environment where participants could share effective practices, challenges encountered, and successful solutions. This cross-organizational knowledge transfer served to elevate the overall quality of youth work practices across the partner network, fostering long-term tolerance, strengthening intercultural dialogue, and building a European identity based on respect for diversity and mutual accountability.
