Objectives

Following the activities carried out with young people from the rural areas of Bistrita-Nasaud county in the last 2 years, especially in the post-pandemic period, we identified that they often face significant challenges and limited opportunities in terms of access to formal education and non-formal, access to certain resources, including digital ones, youth services, employment. Thus, following an informal research, based on the questioning of over 100 young people (17-20 years old) from at least 10 rural communities of Bistrita-Nasaud county, in the period 2022-2024, we identified a low percentage of their participation in non-formal activities - treasure hunt type, movie nights, board games, team games, creative workshops, greening, creative recycling, sports clubs, debate clubs, thematic trips, and others. Although the majority of young people who are still students answered that they participate in this type of activities during the National Programmes Scoala Altfel (A Different School) and Scoala Verde (The Green School), outside of the school year, over 85% no longer have the opportunity to get involved in such activities in their communities. First of all, because there are no spaces intended for young people in the rural communities of BN county, there are no youth centers in the countryside, only certain actions organized by NGOs or schools, and less often by local authorities. Our research also focuses on the young high school students from rural areas who commute daily to cities or communes with high schools, who because of the time (school + commute) can no longer get involved in extra curricular activities. Moreover, it should be mentioned that none of the young people interviewed had the opportunity to participate in any international youth exchange or student exchange, and over 80% did not travel abroad for the purpose of cultural visits. The young people who traveled mentioned that they went to visit their families abroad and very few visited museums, art galleries or other objects of cultural interest. In addition, none of them traveled by train - one of the most sustainable forms of travel. As youth workers, but also as teachers, we consider that non-formal education is as important as formal education, because it puts the student/youth at the center of the learning process to identify and develop his personal talents and abilities and to completes them with new ones in a continuous learning process. Starting from these needs, the goal of our project is to promote among young people from rural areas the importance of non-formal education and learning through discovery in the process of personal and professional development. The objectives we intend to achieve until till the end of the project are: 1. Development of cultural awareness and expression competence for 10 young people from rural areas to understand European values, but also to understand their own culture and other European cultures; 2. Development of the compentence to communicate in English for 10 young people from rural areas in order to increase their chances of employment or admission to colleges in the country or abroad; 3. Development of social and civic competence for 10 young people from rural areas in order to increase self-esteem and train future agents of change in their communities; 4. Development of an environment-friendly attitude for the 10 young people from the countryside by participating in sustainable trips in Europe.
