Objectives

The project "Before It’s Too Late! Peer Mediation — The Needs and Possibilities of Reaching a Solution" was developed in response to the increasing prevalence of peer conflicts, verbal violence, social exclusion and inadequate conflict-resolution skills among young people in the Western Balkans region. Partner organisations identified a common need to strengthen young people’s social, emotional and civic competences and to provide them with practical tools for addressing conflicts in a constructive and non-violent way. The project was based on the understanding that schools and local communities often lack sustainable mechanisms that actively involve young people in preventing violence and promoting dialogue. Peer mediation was therefore selected as an effective and participatory approach that empowers young people to become active contributors to positive change within their communities. The overall objective of the project was to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts through peer mediation, while fostering a culture of dialogue, empathy, inclusion and mutual respect. The specific objectives were:
to develop participants’ competences in peer mediation, non-violent communication, active listening, empathy and conflict transformation;
to increase awareness of the causes, dynamics and consequences of peer violence and interpersonal conflicts;
to strengthen young people’s capacity to act as peer educators, mediators and positive role models in their schools and communities;
to promote intercultural learning, mutual understanding and cooperation among young people from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and North Macedonia;
to encourage active citizenship, participation and social responsibility among young people;
to support the inclusion of participants with fewer opportunities and strengthen their self-confidence, resilience and sense of belonging;
to create sustainable multipliers of knowledge through dissemination activities implemented by participants after the mobility.
 The project fully reflected the Erasmus+ priorities of inclusion and diversity, participation in democratic life, common values and civic engagement. Particular attention was given to involving young people with fewer opportunities, including participants from rural areas, economically disadvantaged backgrounds, minority communities and underdeveloped municipalities. Through workshops, simulations, role plays, group discussions, peer-learning activities and intercultural exchange, participants gained practical experience in mediation and conflict resolution. The learning process was strongly based on experiential and non-formal education methods, enabling participants not only to acquire knowledge but also to develop attitudes and behaviours necessary for constructive communication and peaceful coexistence. Beyond the immediate learning outcomes, the project aimed to generate long-term impact by strengthening peer mediation structures in schools, supporting the development of safer and more inclusive learning environments, and creating a network of young people committed to promoting dialogue, non-violence and active participation in their communities. The project’s success is reflected not only in the competences acquired during the mobility, but also in the extensive dissemination activities carried out afterwards, which reached more than 1,800 students and teachers across four countries and ensured the sustainability and transferability of project results.
