Objectives

By implementing the project “Building Bridges – Through Art to Community Dialogue”, we wanted to respond to the current needs of European organizations working with marginalized and disadvantaged youth groups. In the context of a strongly polarized society, we identified in particular the lack of open and safe dialogue in communities of young people, who are increasingly closing themselves into opinion “bubbles”. This situation leads to the suppression of the voices of groups that have long faced discrimination and social exclusion, which negatively affects cohesion and cooperation in communities. At the same time, we perceived the absence of activities that would systematically bring the voices and stories of vulnerable young people into public discussion and open up sensitive topics, such as everyday manifestations of discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin, religion, gender, sex, age or sexual orientation, as well as barriers preventing their active participation in solving community problems. The main objective of the project was to strengthen community organizing of vulnerable youth groups in five European countries, to develop innovative forms of community dialogue through art, and to contribute to conflict prevention in polarized communities. We implemented this goal mainly by using the Forum Theatre method, which enables active audience participation, opens a constructive dialogue about solutions to real problems, and gives a voice to people who are often invisible in society. Specifically, we focused on: • developing the competencies of youth workers and community leaders in the field of Forum Theatre and facilitating community dialogue, • involving disadvantaged youth groups in creating and presenting their own stories and experiences with discrimination, • raising public awareness of the problems of discrimination and social exclusion at both the local and international levels, • supporting the prevention of burnout among youth workers through sharing experiences, new contacts and inspiring work methods, • building and strengthening an international network of partner organizations and creating a basis for further European cooperation. The project thus aimed to create bridges between individuals and groups in communities, to support empathy, dialogue and active participation of young people in shaping a more inclusive society.
