Objectives

This project was designed to raise awareness among young people about the climate crisis, strengthen sustainable lifestyle habits, and encourage youth to take a more active role in combating climate change. The main starting point of the project is that, although the climate crisis is an urgent issue with direct impacts not only on the environment but also on health, quality of life, and social well-being, the connection between young people’s daily practices (such as consumption, transportation, and shopping) and the climate crisis is not always sufficiently visible. Among the main causes of the climate crisis are the use of fossil fuels, deforestation, and certain industrial and agricultural practices. These processes increase the concentration of greenhouse gases, thereby triggering rising temperatures and extreme weather events. This youth exchange, which took place in the province of Düzce in Türkiye between 31 January and 8 February 2026, aimed to bring together young people from Türkiye, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Romania, North Macedonia, and Greece in order to strengthen intercultural learning and a shared sense of responsibility. Seven participants from each country took part in the project. The groups also included young people with social and economic disadvantages. Although the participant profile in the project file was initially specified as 18–25 years old, due to the partner organizations’ difficulty in finding participants within this age range, the group was formed with diversity in the 16–25 age range. Group leaders were selected to be at least 25 years old (with the exception of the North Macedonian group leader, who was 18 years old due to a shortage of participants). In addition, in order to improve the quality of the project, it was planned to bring together a balanced mix of young people who had previously participated in similar projects and those who were experiencing such an initiative for the first time. Participants who were already more knowledgeable about sustainable living were expected to serve as role models for other participants. In line with this plan, during the activities, participants who already had knowledge on the subject worked in groups together with those who had less experience whenever possible. Within the framework of the project, sessions and practical activities based on non-formal education methods were planned and implemented in order to support the individual and social development of the participants. Through these activities, young people were able to better understand the impacts of climate change on daily life in a more concrete way and had the opportunity to develop more sustainable choices by increasing their awareness of their carbon footprint. One of the most important outcomes aimed for by this project was to enable young people to become more active and responsible individuals in the fight against the climate crisis. Participants were also encouraged to share what they learned at the local level and contribute to awareness-raising and dissemination activities. Overall Objective of the Project To increase young people’s awareness of climate change, strengthen sustainable lifestyle habits, and reinforce intercultural dialogue among youth from different countries. Specific Objectives of the Project To educate and raise awareness among young people about their carbon footprint and motivate them to adopt lifestyles that minimize it. To raise awareness among young people about the possible consequences of climate change and its impacts on daily life. To encourage young people to become environmental activists and to develop social awareness in the fight against climate change. In line with these objectives, the project successfully raised awareness about climate change, encouraged young people to become more sensitive and responsible individuals in this field, and supported them in taking an active role in promoting broader social transformation.
