Objectives

Issues Addressed by the Project and Proposed Solutions This project has been developed to address prevalent social issues among young people in Europe, including addiction, gender inequality, and xenophobia. According to the 2024 report by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA): • 30% of individuals aged 15-64 (approximately 85 million people) have tried illicit drugs at least once. • More than 7,200 opioid-related deaths were recorded in 2023. • Synthetic cannabinoids and high-THC cannabis have increased emergency admissions by 20%. Technology addiction also negatively impacts young people’s daily lives. According to a project survey: • 85% of young people check their phones within the first five minutes of waking up. • They spend an average of 5.2 hours online daily (3.8 hours on social media/gaming). • 70% report that digital addiction negatively affects their sleep and academic performance. Gender inequality remains a significant social issue in Europe. According to Eurostat: • Women earn 13% less than men. • Only 17% of workers in STEM fields are women. • Only 40% of Members of the European Parliament are female. • Cases of cyber violence have increased by 45% since 2022. Rising nationalism and xenophobia threaten the fundamental values of the European Union: • Migration waves have exacerbated social tensions. • Hate crimes and discriminatory incidents in public spaces have increased. Primary Objective of the Project The Reconnect with Korfball project aims to support young individuals who have a history of addiction, engage in excessive technology use, or face socio-economic disadvantages leading to discrimination. The project offers these young people opportunities to transform their disadvantages into strengths and integrate into society as active citizens. By aligning with the European Union’s strategies on combating addiction, gender equality, cultural inclusivity, and anti-discrimination, the project contributes to youth policy implementation. As part of this initiative, Korfball—Korfball, a sport recognized for fostering gender equality and inclusivity, will serve as a key instrument in tackling discrimination. Project Implementation and Impact on Participants The applicant organization, Eğitim Kültür ve İnovatif Projeler (EKİP) Association, collaborates with Kırıkkale Governorship’s “Huzur Köy” rehabilitation project, organizing sports and cultural activities for young individuals undergoing treatment. Feedback from participants highlights korfball as one of the most enjoyable activities. Through planned tournaments and events, the project will support social integration through sports. The Social and Psychological Effects of Sports Scientific research confirms the positive impact of sports on combating addiction and recovery. Encouraging young individuals to participate in sports enhances both their physical and psychological well-being, fostering optimism for the future. As a team sport, korfball strengthens cooperation, communication skills, and social cohesion among participants. Project Goals Combating Addiction: • Raising awareness about drug and technology addiction among young people. • Offering alternative social activities to reduce addiction risks. • Emphasizing the rehabilitative role of sports. Promoting Gender Equality and Social Inclusion: • Ensuring equal opportunities for men and women in sports. • Challenging discriminatory gender norms and social stereotypes. Addressing Radical Nationalism and Xenophobia: • Enhancing intercultural collaboration among young people from diverse backgrounds. •Strengthening European citizenship awareness and fostering multiculturalism. Project Methodology and Sustainability The project employs participatory learning methodologies to encourage active engagement from young people. Key approaches include: • Korfball Sport: Used as a tool to emphasize gender equality and teamwork. • Educational Workshops and Discussion Groups: Focused on combating addiction, gender equality, and anti-discrimination awareness. • Integration of Art and Music: Sports activities will be complemented with painting, dance, and music to enhance youth engagement. • Intercultural Interaction: Events will provide opportunities for young people from different countries to present their cultural backgrounds. To ensure long-term sustainability, the project will collaborate with local authorities, youth organizations, and educational institutions. Participants will disseminate their acquired experiences within their communities, fostering social change. In conclusion, the Reconnect with Korfball project aims to foster both individual and societal transformation through a model of social inclusivity, ultimately creating a more conscious, active, and socially integrated European youth in the long run.
