Objectives

From the perspective of youth work practice, our project focuses on critical goals such as ensuring the more active and equal participation of deaf youth in social life, and developing inclusivity, empathy, and social awareness skills among young people. To reduce the challenges and exclusion faced by deaf youth in social life, we will provide opportunities for them to come together with non-disabled peers, increasing awareness about Deaf culture, promoting sign language education, and supporting the healing of traumas. During this process, we will enable deaf youth to take active roles through socialization and the sharing of cultural heritage. At the same time, fostering empathy, collaboration, and awareness among non-disabled youth is a key point for us. The main objectives of our activities under the project can be summarized as follows: • Through Awareness and Creativity Workshops, we aim to help young people understand the life experiences of deaf peers, develop an inclusive approach, and increase social awareness. These workshops will also allow young participants to showcase their creativity and connect with disadvantaged individuals in society. • Sign Language Training will provide young people with a fundamental communication skill, enabling effective interaction with deaf individuals. These sessions will build cultural connections among young participants while raising awareness of social inclusivity. Moreover, sign language will be recognized as a means of communication and adopted by more young people. • Silent Leadership Journals will encourage silent leader candidates to share their experiences through journals, enhancing their personal development and leadership skills. This method aims to strengthen the problem-solving capacity of leader candidates regarding social issues while developing their leadership abilities. Silent leaders will guide other young people and promote active participation throughout the project. • Individual Learning Maps will be created for each participating young person, enabling us to monitor and support their development during the project. • Reflection Sessions will create a space for young participants to share their experiences. These sessions, which are directly related to understanding their experiences, evaluating their learning processes, and internalizing what they have learned, will provide participants with opportunities to revisit their project experiences, develop self-awareness, engage in mutual learning, and improve through feedback. Thus, their learning processes will be deepened and enriched. The follow-up activities of the Silent Friendship project aim to reach a new group of young people who did not participate in the main project, broadening the impact of the project outcomes and creating a longer-term effect. • Silent Film Workshop and Connect Through Sign Activities will be carried out with approximately 10-12 deaf and non-disabled youth who were not part of the main project. These activities will transfer the knowledge and skills gained during the project to different groups, while also developing social awareness and empathy skills among the participating youth. • Young participants involved in the follow-up activities will benefit from the outputs of the project through short films and sign language training, gaining the opportunity to disseminate the project within their own circles. Through the Silent Film Workshop, young people will use their artistic creativity to produce short films that convey the experiences, challenges, or inspiring success stories of deaf individuals in society. This process will actively engage young participants in the learning process while enabling them to take leadership roles in projects that increase social inclusion and awareness. • The outputs obtained from both the main and follow-up activities will be shared via social media accounts, the project website, and local events. This process will ensure that the project gains visibility among a wider audience. • By preparing a multilingual Results Booklet that includes project experiences and best practices, we aim to inspire other youth work initiatives. • During the annual Silent Friendship Week events, we aim to bring together hearing-impaired youth and other segments of society to foster the development of social skills among young people and promote an inclusive mindset in the community. In this way, we will ensure that hearing-impaired youth become more visible in social life. Our project offers a platform to enhance young people’s social skills, leadership capacities, and social awareness levels, ultimately increasing the effectiveness of youth work. Through this approach, young people will not only be learners but also implementers and advocates of societal change.
