Objectives

Today, the mental health of young people is becoming increasingly important in terms of social well-being and sustainability. Media-driven perceptions of flawless beauty negatively impact young people’s self-esteem and psychological well-being. According to a report published by the European Commission in 2023, 68% of young people stated that the beauty standards they are exposed to on social media negatively affect their self-esteem. Additionally, data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that the prevalence of body image dissatisfaction and disordered eating among young people has increased by 30% over the last decade. The cosmetics and aesthetics industries have also reached a level of environmental harm that cannot be ignored. The global cosmetics industry has an annual carbon footprint of 1.5 billion tons of CO₂, surpassing the total carbon emissions of some small countries. According to a report by the European Environment Agency (EEA), the beauty industry generates approximately 120 billion packaging units per year, many of which are non-recyclable. This situation highlights the urgent need for young people to reassess their consumption habits and adopt more sustainable choices. This project aims to empower young people by fostering body positivity, media literacy, and environmental consciousness, enabling them to challenge beauty standards and adopt sustainable lifestyles. Through interactive activities such as youth exchanges, cultural nights, and nature walks, participants will develop both personal and collective learning experiences. The project will engage 16 young participants from two different countries in two separate 10-day sustainable youth exchange programs, providing an opportunity to reflect on beauty standards, media influence, and sustainable lifestyle choices. Our project directly contributes to raising awareness and promoting social transformation in line with European Youth Goal 5 (Mental Health and Well-being) and European Youth Goal 10 (Sustainable Green Europe) under the Erasmus+ framework. The comprehensive skills and knowledge young participants will gain throughout this process will equip them to become more active, socially responsible, and environmentally conscious individuals in their future careers and communities.
