Objectives

The city of Braunschweig offers young people with fewer opportunities the chance to participate in a low-threshold, participatory mobility project through the DiscoverEU Inclusion trips. Participants are enabled, accompanied by a volunteer, to plan their own European journey and explore Europe together as a youth group by train. This strengthens not only valuable intercultural, democratic, and organizational skills, but also provides access to activities that would otherwise often be unavailable to them. Interaction with peers from different European countries gives young people new perspectives on their future, their aspirations, and the challenges they face. The project aims to promote European identity and solidarity and to empower participants in the long term. These positive experiences are expected to have a lasting impact on their educational and professional opportunities. Furthermore, the project seeks to enhance social inclusion and foster self-efficacy among young people. Through independently planning and organizing their trips, participants develop responsibility, problem-solving skills, and teamwork abilities, which are valuable in daily life, school, and professional contexts. Implementing projects in an international setting also promotes an understanding of diversity, cultural differences, and democratic values, which extends beyond the duration of the trip. The project builds on the successful experiences from 2024 and 2025, when the DiscoverEU Inclusion trips were already implemented. Positive feedback from participants and documented learning outcomes confirm the effectiveness of the approach and provide a solid foundation for repeating the project. Proven methods can thus be further developed, existing networks strengthened and even more young people with fewer opportunities reached.
