Mental health is a crucial issue that affects young people everywhere, regardless of their culture or location. In today’s fast-paced, connected world, young individuals face immense pressures from school, social expectations, and social media. These pressures often lead to increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, making mental health a top priority for youth globally. Whether in the icy landscapes of Iceland or the vibrant cultures of Armenia, young people are on a challenging journey toward emotional well-being, highlighting the need for focused attention on mental health. Research shows that mental health problems among young people have increased dramatically over the years. Youth is a critical time of physical, emotional, and social development. During this period, we not only shape our identities but also lay the groundwork for our future well-being. Addressing mental health during this time is essential as it can lead to lifelong benefits. By equipping young people with the tools and knowledge to manage their mental health, we help them build resilience, practice self-care, and develop a positive outlook. This topic is particularly relevant for youth, as we are at an age where we are both vulnerable and receptive to learning new strategies for well-being. We believe that addressing mental health in a non-formal setting with a peer-to-peer approach is highly effective. These relaxed environments make it easier for us to talk about mental health without feeling judged. Sharing our struggles with friends who understand creates a supportive atmosphere. Many of us face mental health challenges but may lack the right resources or support. By building these supportive networks with our peers, we create a strong sense of community and reduce the stigma around mental health issues. Inspired by discussions with our Armenian friends, we developed the idea for "IceMenia: Two Lands, One Journey – Exploring Mental Health and Self-Care." This two-phase youth exchange will bring together young people from Iceland and Armenia to explore mental health and resilience from different cultural perspectives. In the first phase, we’ll meet in Armenia for a kickoff filled with workshops, discussions, and activities focused on mental health, self-care, and resilience. After that, instead of returning to our daily routines, we will remain active by running awareness-raising campaigns in our own communities. This will help us share what we’ve learned and spread the word about mental health. A few months later, we’ll meet again in Iceland. This phase will build on everything we gained in Armenia, adding more skills and tools for mental health support while also examining how Iceland’s environment and culture shape mental health. This exchange is all about bridging cultures and learning from each other. By experiencing Iceland’s beautiful landscapes and Armenia’s vibrant culture, we’ll gain new perspectives on how different places impact mental health. Moreover, we’ll forge connections that transcend borders and last a lifetime. To ensure that this exchange is impactful and measurable, we have set the following SMART objectives: 1. Increase participants’ awareness of mental health and well-being concepts across cultures. We will achieve this through workshops that focus on understanding key mental health concepts, with a special emphasis on how mental health is perceived, addressed, and supported in both Iceland and Armenia. 2. Develop participants' resilience and self-care skills. We will conduct skills development sessions where participants will learn and implement self-care practices from various areas, equipping them with tools and methods to integrate these skills into their daily lives. 3. Equip participants with skills and knowledge to advocate for mental health in their communities. To meet this objective, we will equip participants with skills and knowledge to advocate for mental health in their communities. To fulfill this objective, we designed the exchange in the way that all participants need to implement one mental health-related initiative or workshop in their home country after each phase of exchange as a follow up action. 4. Foster cross-cultural collaboration and international cooperation. We have already started working towards this objective with key young people involved in writing this proposal. Later, we will include our team members in designing and implementing workshops, which will naturally promote cross-cultural collaboration. By achieving these objectives, the "IceMenia" youth exchange aims to create a lasting impact on the participants, empowering them to lead healthier, more resilient lives while fostering a global network of young mental health advocates.
