Objectives

In Europe, some territories continue to face more challenges than others. This is the case with island territories. Even within Europe and with the European project, islands face obstacles that mainland regions do not. Due to their fragility, isolation, and dependence on external resources, islands are more vulnerable to natural disasters, they are more distant from decision-making centers and, consequently, from opportunities. They also face higher costs due to a greater dependence on resources, and they struggle with infrastructure and access to basic services. And of course, all of this has an even greater impact on certain communities—young people, for instance. Despite the distance between them, the challenges faced by islands are often similar. And these similarities go even further. This is precisely the starting point of the youth exchange "Atlantic Synergies: Shared Challenges, Shared Solutions", planned by AUS (from Iceland) and Leopardo Daltónico (from Madeira Island, Portugal). With this project, we want to understand the challenges and opportunities that both territories have in common. On one hand, Iceland and Madeira are both European territories located in the same ocean; but on the other hand, the differences are vast due to the geographical distance between them and the contrast between Nordic and Southern European cultures. Thus, the "Atlantic Synergies" exchange will explore some of the key challenges faced by young people living in these island territories today—such as the lack of professional opportunities, double isolation, mental health issues, and climate change. The objectives of the project are: - To diagnose and identify the short- and medium-term challenges faced by young people living on the islands of Iceland and Madeira; - To address the topic of youth mental health, taking into account the effects of isolation; - To address the issue of climate change and the vulnerability of island territories; - To create synergies and new opportunities for island youth; - To share the cultures of Iceland and Madeira as a means of empowerment; - To create a best-practices manual aimed at all youth organizations located in island territories across Europe; - To promote European values such as tolerance, diversity, equality, democracy, and respect for human rights; - To increase the visibility of the Erasmus+ programme and, consequently, the European project.
