Objectives

We aim to turn two DiscoverEU journeys into a complete educational pathway that helps two groups of five young people each, coming from the Catania area and facing fewer opportunities, to become more autonomous, aware, and actively engaged in European civic life. The project, submitted by Giustizia Climatico Ora! Catania (linked to Fridays For Future), uses mobility as a concrete learning experience to build personal and social competences and to anchor a culture of sustainability. The two itineraries—Spain in June and Estonia–Latvia–Lithuania in September—last twelve days each, include two accompanying persons, and are framed by structured preparation before departure and a follow-up phase after return, so that the journey becomes a full learning cycle rather than a stand-alone trip. From a youth work perspective, our main goal is to remove practical and psychological barriers to a “first step” outside Sicily through light educational accompaniment, sustainable rhythms, simple tools, and strong ownership by the participants. We want young people to discover Europe as a space of rights, opportunities, and shared responsibilities, connecting climate action to everyday life: how we move, what we eat, and how we tell the stories of the cities we cross. We will work on travel autonomy, budget management, problem solving, teamwork, intercultural communication, and basic digital literacy, using non-formal education methods that valorise direct experience such as sustainable urban walks, micro-inquiries, reflective journals, and audio/photo storytelling. We also want to strengthen the link between young people and their community. Participants will co-design the itineraries, meet local actors (Europe Direct info points, environmental NGOs, youth groups), document interesting practices, and—once back—share what they learned through public events and accessible communication outputs. In this way, mobility serves the local community and multiplies the impact beyond the two journeys. Learning will be made visible and transferable. Each participant will set personal goals, collect evidence along the way, and complete their Youthpass, with a focus on the eight key competences and on climate awareness. Accompanying persons will act as facilitators rather than directive guides, supporting shared decision-making, safety, wellbeing, and a form of “reasonable inclusion” that is concrete and proportionate to real needs. In short, our objectives are to offer a first high-quality European experience to young people with fewer opportunities; to increase autonomy, soft skills, and active citizenship; to foster more sustainable travel habits and everyday choices; to build connections among civic movements, EU-related bodies, and local communities; and to produce communication and educational outputs that remain available to other young people and youth workers in the area.
