Objectives

Families attending support groups and workshops organized by the Latvian Autism Association often acknowledge that one of the greatest challenges is going out into society – not only because of the lack of accessible environments, but also due to prejudice and negative attitudes from the public. This reduces motivation for people with disabilities to participate in social activities and to stand up for their rights. Parents frequently refer to good practice examples abroad, where accessibility and public understanding are much stronger. However, in Latvia the financial burden of raising a child with special needs is so high that traveling abroad – and sometimes even within Latvia – is simply not possible. This increases the inequality between young people. The aim of this project is to give young people with autism and their siblings equal opportunities to travel alongside their peers and gain broader life experience. Our target group is families where a significant portion of resources is dedicated to therapies, medical visits, and developmental support for a child with autism. As a result, other children in the family are often left with very limited opportunities to gain new impressions or to travel outside their everyday environment. Many of these young people spend most of their time at home or in day centers, and only rarely have a chance to break away from their daily routine. Although they, like any other young person, are curious to explore the world, travel, and broaden their horizons, such opportunities remain very limited. Our experience with this type of project began in 2025, when we took part in the DiscoverEU Inclusion initiative for the first time. The positive feedback and experiences shared by the participating young people clearly demonstrated how important this opportunity is for their development and self-confidence. This strong outcome motivated us to apply again in order to continue providing valuable experiences for young people. Project goals and benefits: -Strengthen the self-esteem, social skills, and sense of responsibility of young people with autism and their siblings. - Provide opportunities to gain new experiences and knowledge. The project will allow them to explore different European cultures, meet peers, learn from practices in other countries, and even consider future study opportunities abroad, where inclusive education is more accessible. - Reduce the concerns of parents and families about their children’s daily life and future. Giving children the chance to experience something new will bring families a sense of security and hope. - Foster a sense of belonging to the European Union by strengthening young people’s understanding of EU values, civic participation, and their feeling of being part of a wider community. - Offer the chance to practice essential life skills in real situations. - Promote intercultural dialogue. Cooperation with organizations abroad that represent people with autism will give young people the chance to meet peers from other countries. - Encourage sustainable travel by showing that it is both practical and accessible. Such projects benefit not only young people with autism, but also their families, helping them realize that they are not alone and that the opportunities offered by Europe can be accessible to everyone. At the same time, it strengthens the support capacity of our organization, as well as increases both LAA staff and families’ awareness and knowledge of the opportunities and resources available through EU projects.
