Objectives

Island territories face unique challenges due to their geographical characteristics. Being physically disconnected from the mainland, islands experience a double insularity, resulting from both geographical and political isolation, as they are distant from centers of power and decision-making. This is why European islands are legally recognized as disadvantaged territories. However, this recognition almost never translates into practice. One of the main goals of Leopardo Daltónico is precisely to address the insularity of Madeira Island, with young people as its primary target group. Another goal is to strengthen the European project within the Madeiran community. The distance from centers of power makes the community less aware of the advantages of the European Union—something that was reflected, for example, in the last European elections, with a 59% abstention rate. It is in this context that the project “From the Island to the Mainland” emerges, aiming to bring together a group of young residents of the island for their first experience of this kind. These are young people with fewer opportunities, facing social, economic, or cultural obstacles that make their role in society more challenging. Through this project, we want them to have a multicultural experience, engaging with the European project, promoting the values on which the European Union was founded (tolerance, diversity, multicultural dialogue, and democracy), while also acquiring personal and professional skills. In this way, we aim to strengthen their sense of citizenship, raise their awareness of youth issues in Europe, and empower them to become agents of change among their peers.
