Objectives

Bridges of Inclusion – Migration, Belonging & Intercultural Dialogue addresses the concrete barriers faced by young people in Pinhel and Guarda (a rural, inland, border region) where distance from urban centers, economic limitations, and low exposure to European opportunities keep many young people away from mobility programs and civic and democratic participation. The project will empower these young people through a DiscoverEU mobility experience designed with 360º mentoring (before/during/after), non-formal learning while traveling, and formal recognition of learning, promoting European values, civic participation, and personal/intercultural development. The project will offer 25 young people (aged 18 to 21) with fewer opportunities, residing in Pinhel and Guarda, a learning path focused on migration and belonging, youth participation, civic engagement, and active citizenship. Our focus is on young people who face geographical, economic, educational/cultural barriers and, in many cases, specific migration challenges; the project will provide practical tools to overcome these obstacles and take action at local and European level. Project objectives (youth work perspective): • Connect young people to European values and citizenship through an educational itinerary through Madrid, Marseille, Turin, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Brussels, ensuring that, at the end, participants demonstrate a greater understanding of democracy, rights, and European belonging (measured by pre/post evaluation). • Increase participants' civic participation by developing simple civic tools through non-formal education methods; goal: each micro-group (5 trips in total) to carry out ≥1 civic action after mobility (debate, workshop, volunteering), with ≥75% of young people applying their new skills. • Reinforce awareness of EU values, human rights, and non-discrimination through NFE activities; goal: ≥80% report in final evaluations that they have increased their knowledge compared to pre-project. • Provide international mobility to 25 young people, with ≥40% making their first international trip; ensure a level playing field through barrier-based selection, 360º mentoring, and coverage of hidden costs (mandatory reservations, local passes, mobile data, and small essentials). • Develop key competences (intercultural communication, digital/media literacy, multilingualism, personal/social/learning to learn) through daily briefings/debriefings, rotating roles (navigator/time-keeper/storyteller) and short tasks; issue Youthpass to 100% of participants, making learning visible and transferable (Europass). Our methodology will focus on non-formal education principles, peer discussions, and experiential learning during visits to the six cities; daily reflections (short notes/audio/photo captions) will also complement the activities, allowing our participants to track their civic and personal journey. 360º mentoring and accessibility adjustments (simple language, pictograms, buddy system, reasonable accommodation) will ensure equal participation for first-time travelers and young people with a migrant background. From the point of view of youth work practice, the project is aligned with EU Youth Goals 3 (Inclusive Societies) and 9 (Space & Participation for All): it creates space and time to reflect on European values, learn through non-formal methods, and develop key competences (critical thinking, civic engagement, intercultural communication). Youthpass will ensure that participants reflect on and document progress in areas of competence, making the results recognizable and usable in future opportunities. In short, Bridges of Inclusion responds to the core needs of young people in Pinhel/Guarda, equipping them with the skills and confidence to overcome barriers and actively participate in democratic life, with effects that will last long after the project has ended.
