JJ FILMS & CULTURE was founded with the aim of promoting intercultural exchange and local culture. With the start of the permaculture project Dupa Gard, sustainability and permaculture moved into the primal focus becoming a life-long learning project. To this, we decided to settle our NGO in a place (Poșaga de Jos) that is both geographically and economically disadvantaged -- being also faced with a rapid depopulation . Our conscious choice was to be in a place full of potential - due to its pristine nature, conservation of traditions and complex history- but faced with the incapacity of offering young people the choice of staying or coming back to something that makes sense for their future. Having said that, our involvement in youth work has increased in the last years (not only as participants in training/s for youth workers), but also finally achieving our first Youth Exchange grant this year. During and especially after implementing it, Ioana and Andreas realised what MAJOR impact this project had on the young participants lives: beyond the sense of friendship and family we created, the skills, the knowledge and the competences they gained were (in their words) a life changer. Many of them came from a fewer opportunities background. This motivated us to apply for DiscoverEU as knowing the young people from our region, their backgrounds and their potential. We also know they are faced with a lot of pressure from their family status to accept that there are no other possibilities after graduating high-shool than work to support their families. Therefore, such projects as DiscoverEU could play as a game-changer for the participants that will be given the option of discovering a totally other perspective on their future. Traveling is, at the end of the day, a journey into self-discovery as we all tend to project and relate to the exterior <<I>> according to the things that are familiar to us. Therefore, what we want to achieve (and what our objectives are) is to empower these young people and make them understand that life (especially at such a young age) has endless possibilities. Baia de Aries - once a great mining city- is nowadays a place of unemployment, high alcoolism, very to none cultural life, and forgotten identity. However, we believe that exactly in such places lies a lot of unused potential-- often found in young people. This is why, once again from our perspective as youth work practice (but also parents) we consider this project is a huge opportunity of offering 5 young people the chance to understand that Europe, as a whole, is a place of equal & multiple opportunities, freedom and inclusion.
