Objectives

Through “Breaking Barriers, Building Europe”, we want to ensure that young people with fewer opportunities — including visually impaired, hearing impaired, and disadvantaged youth from Cluj-Napoca and surrounding rural areas — can access European mobility on equal footing with their peers. Too often, these young people are excluded from international opportunities because of inaccessible information, lack of support, or low self-confidence. Our project seeks to remove these barriers and make DiscoverEU a safe, inclusive, and meaningful experience for them. The objectives of the project are to increase access to DiscoverEU for 15 young people aged 18–21 with fewer opportunities, to strengthen their competences in areas such as intercultural communication, travel planning, and environmental awareness, and to ensure that 100% of the participants in each group are supported by accessible tools and guidance adapted to their needs. By organising three thematic journeys to European institutions in Luxembourg, Strasbourg, and Brussels, the project also aims to develop participants’ sense of European identity and active citizenship. From a youth work perspective, the project will provide continuous mentoring and facilitation, combining the role of accompanying persons who guarantee accessibility with mentors who guide the learning process. This dual support system ensures safety while encouraging independence, reflection, and competence development. By integrating non-formal learning methods, daily reflection, and Youthpass, the project will transform travel into a structured learning pathway that is recognised and transferable to education, employment, and community life. In essence, the project demonstrates how inclusive youth work can make DiscoverEU accessible for all, empowering young people with fewer opportunities to grow in confidence, develop new competences, and take their place as active European citizens.
