Objectives

In Europe, we currently waste from 1,7 to 6,3 tonnes of waste depending on the country. Just in terms of household waste alone, each person in Europe is currently producing, on average, half a tonne of such waste. Only 40% of it is reused or recycled, and in some countries, more than 60% still goes to landfill (source: Environmental Data Centre on Waste, Eurostat). Minimising waste, not generating waste and turning waste into sth useful is one key to a circular economy. Slovakia generated 478 kg per capita of municipal waste in 2022. Slovakia's recycling rate for municipal waste increased from 23% in 2016 to 42.2% in 2020. However, this is still below the 2025 target of 55%. The European context provides momentum for adopting circular economy principles and zero waste practices. The general SK and European perspective gives us the context and the urgency to work on sth that we love and believe. We believe that waste management should not only be driven by top-down policies from the EU or authorities but also by grassroots efforts and individual actions. As Centrum rodiny is built on several pillars, sustainability is one of them. We communicate this approach throughout various workshops and educational activities, such as cooking from donated foods, upcycling from donated clothes, repairing tools and machines or organizing swaps and bazars. We realize that youth needs to understand that zero waste approach is our responsibility and it is clearly helpful towards more sustainable society. To achieve that, we started a project with a local high school Bilikova, where classes come to our center and they take part in these activities. We are in the third and last year of this long term project and until now, we had almost 950 students. Part of the workshops is focused on zero waste problematics such as food waste , upcycling, repairing and this gave us the idea to go from local to a European project. Thanks to the positive feedback and the general Sk and Eu perspective we decided to take this project further and turn it into a youth exchange, based on zero waste philosophy, where practical workshops and good practices will be the core of the project. The idea can therefore reach wider audience and our know-how can be beneficial for our international partners and their public. We named the project Our case - less waste to highlight the importance of the 5 principles of zero waste in the issue. The 5Rs from the zero waste bibliography are refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot and by following them and aiming towards them you generate as little waste as possible. There are differents and more Rs included in the zero waste movement but we decided to focus on the 5ones because we believe are the clearest to the subject. "Our case - less waste" aims to address sustainability through the following objectives: Project Objectives: Raise Awareness: Educate participants about zero waste principles and the circular economy, focusing on the 5Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot). Promote Zero Waste Lifestyle: Exchange practical ideas and solutions for minimising waste in daily life. Empower Participants: Encourage participants to adopt zero waste practices and inspire their communities. Simulate Sustainable Living: Create a sustainable community for 9 days where participants practice zero waste living. Inclusivity: Engage 35 young people, ensuring 40% are from disadvantaged backgrounds (economic, social, cultural, and other obstacles). Skill Development: Facilitate non-formal learning through creative workshops, discussions, and visits to develop new skills and competences. Community Engagement: Develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become change agents in everyday life and communities. Creative Presentations: Form 5 groups to create workshops or presentations on the 5Rs of zero waste. Knowledge Exchange: Partner with organisations to share expertise in sustainable and zero waste lifestyles. Dissemination: Produce at least 5 videos to share project results and promote zero waste practices to a wider audience. Stakeholder Engagement: Promote project outcomes to stakeholders and the local community, sparking conversations about zero waste and motivating sustainable actions. We are committed to making this project impactful for participants, partners, and local communities, contributing to a positive and sustainable change. Our dedication to these issues stems from our care for people and the planet, and our desire to drive meaningful progress towards sustainability.
