Objectives

The “Back to Earth” project is an initiative led by the young people of the Maison des Jeunes in Hannut and the youth from the association Vivre Ensemble Avec Nos Différences on Réunion Island. Despite the geographical distance, both groups share a strong concern about ecology and climate change. This concern is reflected in their desire to adopt more sustainable consumption behaviors and to take action to help preserve the planet. These young people are highly aware of environmental issues and aspire to more sustainable lifestyles. However, the excessive exposure to social media they face on a daily basis also brings challenges such as eco-anxiety and a feeling of helplessness in the face of the scale of the problems. This is why the project was created as a bilateral international youth exchange. For 10 days, participants will live an unforgettable experience together in accommodation located in the Belgian Ardennes. The aim of this project is to reflect on environmental challenges while adopting sustainable practices such as waste reduction, water and energy management, local consumption and production, soft mobility, and the protection of the natural environment. The learning process for the participants unfolds in two complementary ways: first, through awareness-raising, and second, through more concrete actions. The project relies on non-formal learning methods, centered on the participants and encouraging their active involvement throughout the process. Ultimately, this project fosters the development of essential skills for their civic engagement.
