Objectives

The project My City, My Voice aims to empower young people by transforming them from participants into organisers. Too often, especially young people with fewer opportunities, are only given the role of observers in projects designed for them. This project reverses that logic: young people are actively involved from the very beginning and take ownership of the content, the activities, and the way their city is represented. The main objective is to strengthen young people’s leadership, teamwork, and self-confidence. By taking responsibility for planning and implementing the youth exchanges in Antwerp and Istanbul, they learn how to design a programme, manage a budget, and make decisions collectively. They discover that their voice matters and that they can play an active role in an international context. The project also seeks to contribute to inclusion and diversity in youth work. Participants come from five countries and have diverse cultural and social backgrounds. By presenting their city and their daily realities to each other, they learn how to deal with differences and discover diversity as an added value. This fosters mutual understanding, solidarity, and intercultural cooperation. Another key objective is to place peer learning at the centre. Young people do not only learn from youth workers but, above all, from each other: as guides in their city, as organisers of activities, and as partners in group tasks. They exchange experiences, reflect on their own realities in comparison to those of others, and gain inspiration for their personal future. From a youth work practice perspective, the project develops a concrete methodology where young people truly take responsibility. Organisations learn how to create space for young people to make choices without losing structure or quality. This provides new insights on how participation can be structurally embedded in youth work, also beyond the duration of the exchanges. The core objectives are: – To strengthen young people in leadership, initiative, and ownership. – To promote inclusion and diversity by engaging young people from different backgrounds. – To foster peer learning through active participation and sharing of experiences. – To provide organisations with new practices to structurally involve young people in decision-making. – To create sustainable impact by disseminating results and methods within local, national, and European networks. The ultimate goal is for young people to experience that their voice truly matters – in their city, in Europe, and in their own lives – and for youth work organisations to learn how to structurally give space to that voice.
