Objectives

Through this exchange, we aim to provide participants with a meaningful experience that supports them in their search for identity and in developing a more conscious self-image. The young people we work with on a daily basis are at a crucial stage in their personal development, navigating the transitional period towards adulthood. We observe that this stage in life is accompanied by numerous questions and challenges. Each participant also carries personal struggles shaped by significant factors in their lives so far. These include the experience of being uprooted from their North African heritage, the loss of connection with their Flemish background, disrupted relationships with parents, family, or foster families, as well as the search for identity linked to adoption. The aim of this project is to bring these young people and their mentors into direct contact with Moroccan culture, enabling them to explore both differences and similarities with Belgian culture. We specifically seek an encounter with a culture that differs fundamentally from the Belgian context, as such contrasts allow participants to experience “being different” in a positive and magnified way. We wish to explore how young people and their support networks in Morocco navigate the transition around the age of 18, and how this compares to the Belgian context. What are their dreams, fears, and challenges at the threshold of adulthood? How do they look towards the future, or reflect on their past? How does their community perceive this transition? And what changes are visible at a societal level? By experiencing elements of culture shock together with peers, and by engaging with different ways of thinking, feeling, perceiving, and living, participants are encouraged to look beyond habits and appearances and to foster genuine curiosity for the individual behind those cultural practices. This exchange and cultural immersion aims to challenge assumptions, broaden perspectives, and stimulate alternative ways of thinking and acting. We strongly believe that by placing young people in a different cultural context, they will be inspired to reflect collectively with their peer group on this important stage of their lives. Ultimately, the project seeks to highlight that the aspirations of Belgian young people—who are facing challenging circumstances and transitions—are not fundamentally different from those of Moroccan young people. Both groups share the desire to live fully, to be seen and acknowledged for who they are, and to demonstrate to friends and peers that they are alive in the present moment, unafraid to pursue their dreams and make their own choices.
