Our project aims to respond to a very clear need that we and our partners identified in our daily youth work and in our first youth exchange: young people from rural, remote and socially or economically disadvantaged areas rarely have the chance to take part in international mobility. These young people are often excluded because of financial limits, geographical isolation, or simply because they have never heard about Erasmus+ opportunities. Without such experiences, their horizons remain narrow, their confidence low, and their chances to grow as active citizens are limited. Through this youth exchange, we want to change that. We want to open doors for young people from Czechia, France, Romania and Portugal who would otherwise not step outside their local communities, and to show them that they are capable of engaging internationally. At the same time, we aim to strengthen the quality of youth work we provide. From our practice we have seen that when disadvantaged young people finally get access to international activities, they often struggle to speak up, to express their ideas, or to cooperate effectively in teams. Many of them are used to simply following instructions rather than actively contributing. This limits their confidence, their teamwork, and their ability to take initiative. To answer these needs, our project has five main objectives: Promote international mobility – We want to offer first-time international mobility to disadvantaged youth and help them build international friendships and networks. Experiencing intercultural teamwork will broaden their perspectives and show them that they are part of a wider European community. Improve communication skills – We will focus on both verbal and non-verbal communication through non-formal learning methods such as group discussions, role plays and intercultural activities. The aim is to help participants practice active listening, express ideas clearly, and feel more confident in speaking up in a group. Develop teamwork and cooperation abilities – Outdoor team challenges, trust games, and cooperative tasks will be used to give participants practical experience in working towards common goals. They will learn to share responsibilities, take on different roles, resolve conflicts and celebrate collective success. Build self-confidence and initiative – Participants will gradually take more responsibility during the exchange by leading energisers, facilitating small workshops, or presenting results. This step-by-step approach will help them recognise their strengths and develop the courage to take initiative, both in the project and back home in their communities. Ensure inclusion and equality – Above all, we want to create a safe and supportive environment where every young person feels respected, valued, and able to participate fully, regardless of their background. Equal opportunities are at the heart of this project, and we will pay special attention to making sure those with fewer chances are empowered to succeed. From the perspective of youth work practice, this project is not only about giving young people a chance to travel abroad. It is about equipping them with essential life competences that will serve them far beyond the duration of the exchange: communication, cooperation, confidence, and initiative. It is about providing them with positive experiences where their voices matter and where they can grow in a safe and inclusive environment. By engaging young people actively in all stages – preparation, implementation, and follow-up – we also strengthen their sense of ownership and responsibility. This approach ensures that the project truly reflects their needs and interests, and that the learning outcomes have a lasting effect on their personal development. In short, through this youth exchange we want to give disadvantaged young people the chance to speak up and team up: to find their voice, to work together, and to believe in themselves as capable, active young Europeans.
