Objectives

Young people across Europe are increasingly concerned about their health, eating habits, and how their choices affect the planet. Many struggle to maintain a balanced diet because of fast food culture, a lack of proper education on nutrition, or pressure from social media and beauty standards. At the same time, they are more aware than ever of global issues like climate change, but often don’t know how everyday actions — like what they eat or how they shop — connect to sustainability. Mental health is another major concern, with more young people feeling anxiety, low self-esteem, and stress related to body image and lifestyle. These shared challenges were the starting point for this project, which was co-created by young people from Germany, Türkiye, North Macedonia, Serbia, Poland, and Spain. Together with youth workers, they developed this youth exchange to explore how food, health, sustainability, and self-image are all connected — and how small changes can make a big difference. Young people played an active role in shaping the themes and activities of this project from the beginning. They chose to focus on balanced nutrition, healthy habits, mental well-being, sustainable food choices, and body image because these are issues they deal with in their daily lives. The exchange will give participants space to learn and reflect through non-formal education — including workshops, cultural sharing, cooking together, and group discussions. They will learn practical skills like how to read food labels, understand portion sizes, and identify foods that give the body energy and strength. These sessions are designed not just to give information but to help participants feel more confident in making decisions that benefit their health. The learning will also focus on the environmental side of eating — helping them understand how reducing food waste, eating local and seasonal products, and avoiding overconsumption can support both personal and planetary health. Another important part of the project is the chance to talk openly about body image and mental well-being. Many young people feel judged for how they look, or compare themselves to unrealistic images online. This can damage self-confidence and emotional health. Through guided activities and conversations, participants will be encouraged to think about how food, emotions, and self-image are connected. They’ll share experiences, support one another, and build new, healthier ways of thinking about their bodies. These sessions will be handled with care, using creative and inclusive approaches that allow everyone to feel safe and respected. The aim is not only to raise awareness but to give young people the tools to support their mental health and feel good in their own skin. One of the strongest parts of this exchange is the spirit of collaboration and solidarity between the six partner countries. By working together, young people will see that these challenges are not just local — they are shared across Europe. They’ll discover how different cultures approach food and health, and learn from one another’s experiences. The exchange will build friendships and create a strong sense of belonging and cooperation. At the end of the project, participants will not only have new knowledge and skills but also the motivation to take what they’ve learned back home. They’ll be encouraged to share it with friends, families, and their communities — becoming peer educators and role models. This is a project built by young people, for young people, and it shows what is possible when youth voices are at the center of learning and action.
