Environment and climate changeInclusion of marginalised young peopleDemocracy and inclusive democratic participation

Objectives

With Green Horizons we aim to empower young people to actively address the pressing challenges of climate change. In preparatory discussions, many expressed feelings of powerlessness and a lack of opportunities to take action, particularly those from marginalized groups such as socio-economically disadvantaged families, migrant communities, or rural regions. Our project seeks to bridge this gap by not only providing knowledge but also equipping young people with concrete skills, tools for action, and new perspectives. 1. Strengthening practical action competences instead of abstract knowledge transfer The focus is not on theoretical debates about climate change but on linking the topic to the everyday realities of young people. They learn how sustainable living is possible even with limited resources – for example, through community-based swap initiatives, plastic-free alternatives, or low-cost vegetarian meals. At the same time, they gain insights into how local politics works and where their voices carry weight. The international dimension – through the exchange of experiences from Germany, Sweden, Italy, and Greece – highlights that climate issues are globally relevant, but solutions begin at the local level. 2. Skills for youth participation and civic engagement Participants acquire hands-on skills they can directly apply: - Project design (organizing Clean-Up Days, community debates, resource management). - Campaigning (photography, interviews, storytelling, social media campaigns on Instagram, TikTok, blogs). - Creative methods (upcycling, street art as tools for environmental messages). - Intercultural communication & conflict resolution, as the exchange brings together diverse international perspectives. These competences are relevant for environmental action but also strengthen their broader civic participation in school, training, and work. 3. Transformation of attitudes and mindsets A central goal is the shift from resignation to self-efficacy. Young people experience through visible actions – such as a successful waste collection campaign or an online initiative – that their engagement can have an impact. Marginalized voices are strengthened through participatory methods such as fishbowl discussions or peer-to-peer workshops. Participants develop a sense of responsibility in resource use, solidarity with peers from other countries, and openness towards diverse perspectives. 4. Innovative methods in youth work Green Horizons deliberately applies non-formal, creative, and experiential learning approaches. These include music, theatre, street art, excursions in Berlin, and public space interventions. Reflection rounds and learning diaries ensure that experiences are transferred into their personal lives. In doing so, the project demonstrates how climate education and youth work can be meaningfully combined. 5. Long-term impact and multiplication, project outcomes extend beyond the exchange and generate sustainability: - Young people launch their own mini-projects such as swap events, Green Youth Days, or school actions. - Knowledge is spread within communities through peer-groups. - Political participation is encouraged through stronger engagement in local initiatives. - Career perspectives in environmental education, sustainability, and communication are opened up. 6. On the level of youth work practice, the project pursues clear pedagogical objectives: - Empowerment of young people with fewer opportunities. - Strengthening participatory structures within youth organisations. - Linking climate education with inclusion, ensuring that ecological and social justice are addressed together. - Promoting transnational cooperation and creating best-practice models that partner organisations can integrate into their regular youth work. This creates a learning and experiential space where young people not only talk about climate change but experience that their actions matter. Green Horizons combines environmental education with youth-centered methods, promotes empowerment, solidarity, and meaningful participation. In doing so, it contributes to the personal development of young people and strengthens youth work as a driving force for sustainable and inclusive societal development.
