Objectives

The heart of this project is to give young people a space where they can experience empathy as a real force for connection, inclusion and action. In today’s Europe many young people struggle with loneliness, stereotypes, anxiety about the future and the feeling of not being heard. Through this exchange in Assisi, a city known worldwide as a symbol of peace, dialogue and care for creation, we want to create a safe, inspiring and intercultural environment where they can discover both themselves and one another, and learn that diversity is not a threat but a resource for building community. From a youth work perspective, the project is designed as a journey of non-formal and informal learning. Young people will grow not by listening to lectures but by living, sharing and creating together: cooking meals, working in small groups, engaging in role plays, visiting the Pro Animale sanctuary in the Assisi valley, reflecting in circles under the olive trees, or celebrating their cultures in the evenings. Each of these moments becomes a learning opportunity, helping them to develop the competences they need for life: active listening, self-confidence, conflict resolution, intercultural communication, and a stronger sense of belonging to Europe. The objectives of the project are therefore: To strengthen empathy among participants as a practical competence that supports intercultural dialogue, inclusion of diverse groups, and peaceful community life. To offer young people with fewer opportunities the chance to take part in an international project where they feel supported, recognised and empowered. To connect personal development with broader societal challenges, helping participants to face stress, anxiety and climate concerns with resilience and creativity. To promote sustainable practices and ecological awareness, inspired by Assisi’s Franciscan heritage and the visit to Pro Animale, showing how care for others and care for the planet are inseparable. To train young people to take initiative by designing and implementing their own workshops and local action plans, turning learning into action. In youth work practice, this means creating a project where young people are not passive receivers but active agents. They are involved in planning, they co-lead activities, they reflect on their learning daily, and they bring the results back to their communities through follow-up initiatives. For participants with fewer opportunities, reinforced mentoring and inclusive methods ensure that they are not only present but truly able to thrive. By implementing this project we want to achieve more than a successful youth exchange. We want to plant seeds of empathy and intercultural understanding that young people will carry home, multiply in their schools, youth groups and communities, and keep alive in their own choices. The impact we aim for is that participants return with new competences, stronger confidence, and the feeling that they are not alone but part of a wider European family where their voices and actions matter.
