Young people across Europe face growing challenges linked to social exclusion, limited opportunities, cultural misunderstandings, and rising polarization within their communities. Many of them struggle to find spaces where they feel valued, included, and free to express their identity. At the same time, they often lack opportunities to gain practical skills and intercultural experiences that prepare them for active participation in society. For young people with fewer opportunities, including those facing economic hardship, living in rural areas, or belonging to minority groups, these barriers can be even stronger. Food, however, is a universal and accessible tool that all young people can relate to. It carries cultural identity, family traditions, and personal memories, while also being a practical skill that can be developed and shared. Cooking together creates a natural environment for communication, collaboration, and creativity, making it an ideal method for fostering social inclusion and intercultural learning among youth. The “Culinary Bridges” project responds directly to these needs by offering a safe, supportive, and dynamic learning environment where young people can: • Feel included and respected by sharing their culinary traditions and learning from those of others, breaking down stereotypes and building mutual understanding. • Develop key competences that are essential for their personal and professional future, including teamwork, communication, leadership, problem-solving, and creativity. • Gain confidence and a sense of belonging by taking an active role in planning, implementing, and evaluating activities, thus experiencing ownership of their learning process. • Strengthen intercultural awareness by exploring the diversity of European food traditions, discovering both differences and similarities that connect them as part of a shared European identity. • Learn sustainable practices by engaging with practical methods of reducing food waste, using local and seasonal products, and reflecting on the environmental impact of food choices. The main objectives of the project are therefore: 1. Promote social inclusion by creating a space where young people from different cultural, social, and economic backgrounds can connect, learn, and cooperate through food. 2. Enhance intercultural exchange and understanding by encouraging young people to present their culinary heritage, traditions, and stories, and to engage in dialogue with peers from other countries. 3. Provide educational and skill-building opportunities by integrating practical cooking sessions with non-formal learning methods that strengthen both culinary and life skills. 4. Encourage active youth participation and citizenship by empowering participants to take leadership roles in the exchange, make decisions collectively, and engage in community-based activities. 5. Foster sustainability and responsibility by raising awareness of environmentally friendly cooking practices and equipping young people with the tools to advocate for sustainability in their communities. 6. Create a replicable and lasting model for youth exchanges where cooking is used as a tool for learning, inclusion, and social change, inspiring similar projects across Europe. In summary, “Culinary Bridges” addresses the pressing need for inclusive, creative, and engaging spaces where young people can grow personally and socially while experiencing Europe’s cultural diversity firsthand. By using cooking as the main activity, the project ensures that young people can learn, share, and act in ways that are meaningful, enjoyable, and impactful, both during the exchange and long after it ends.
