Objectives

The Spring School: Education and Remembrance is an international youth exchange with a thirty-year history. Here, young people learn together about the history of National Socialism and, more specifically, about the Bergen-Belsen prisoner-of-war and concentration camp. On this basis, they then address contemporary socio-political issues and problems that affect the participants' lives, their countries, and Europe as a whole. Particular attention is paid to collective deliberations on the establishment of a democratic and solidarity-based (European) society that includes all people. In this way, the project aims to counteract the continuing increase in discrimination and political radicalization within and outside Europe, the feeling of powerlessness and inability of young people to act in the face of multiple national and international crises, and the need for positive non-formal international educational experiences. However, participants should not only acquire knowledge about the past and derive strategies for action in the present and future. Rather, the program aims to enable young people in general to establish historical and socio-political connections and analyze them independently. By examining the mechanisms of discrimination and social inequality, participants are sensitized to socially relevant issues. The problems and realities of the participants' lives can then be understood in depth against their social background, rather than being resolved through compensatory mechanisms such as racism or anti-Semitism. During the project, young people work together to address the reality of exclusion and persecution in Germany and Europe, both past and present. They learn media literacy skills i.e. searching for information on socio-political events, thereby developing competencies for digital transformation, among other things. In addition, the project aims to encourage personal development through positive learning experiences and international exchange, promoting the participants' values such as understanding of democracy, acceptance, and intercultural communication. This is achieved not least through experiencing democratic processes, e.g., the joint creation of rules, and an environment in which participants can contribute their own perspectives and skills, be seen, and take responsibility for themselves and their learning. Participants are thus motivated to exercise their own rights and duties and to influence their social environment, e.g., through active participation in democratic processes. This International encounter should reveal that many aspects of everyday life, opportunities, and problems, especially against the backdrop of multiple crises such as the war against Ukraine or climate change, are shared across borders, making it possible to develop common solutions and strategies for action. This also strengthens the perception of belonging to an international and European community.
