Objectives

The aim of the project is to empower disadvantaged young people from the Romani community, the largest minority in Europe, to become active designers of their living environment. Through ecological projects such as urban gardening, upcycling, and solidarity-based agriculture, they will learn how to take responsibility and initiate sustainable change in their own neighborhood. The goal is to promote self-efficacy and personal responsibility. We can be the change we want to see. From the perspective of youth (social) work, the focus is also on strengthening personal and social skills: The young people experience recognition and participation through teamwork, international encounters, and shared responsibility. Romani young people in particular, who often experience discrimination and social exclusion, are provided with a space, a safer space, where their cultural traditions—such as nature-related knowledge and their own language—can be combined with modern ecological approaches. This creates an empowerment process that both strengthens their identity and opens up new perspectives for professional and social participation. The project also aims to promote intercultural learning and solidarity across national borders. Through collaboration between young people from Germany, Bulgaria, and Romania, prejudices are broken down and mutual understanding is fostered. At the same time, sustainable networks are created that extend beyond the project. In the long term, we want to ensure that the young people – especially those from marginalized Romani communities – return to their communities strengthened, share their experiences as multipliers, and thereby actively contribute to ecological justice, social participation, and solidarity-based European coexistence.
