Objectives

The Gustav Stresemann Institute (GSI) in Bonn, together with its long-standing French partner Cefir, is planning a Franco-German project entitled “Theater Without Borders – TOG.ether for Europe.” The aim is to provide young people with fewer opportunities a creative way to engage with Europe and the European Union by combining methods from theatre pedagogy and intercultural education. Beyond cognitive knowledge about the EU, the focus lies on conveying and experiencing European values. The project specifically targets young people who often face difficulties in education or working life. Participants come from two institutions: the Abendrealschule (ARS) Bonn and the Centre Social du Faubourg de Béthune in Lille. Both organisations support young people in reintegrating into school, training, or employment and in establishing a stable daily routine. The theatre project complements this mission by combining intercultural experience, personal empowerment, and European education. The young participants face similar challenges: many are early school or vocational training dropouts, and they have limited knowledge of the EU and European history. They often lack cultural exposure (such as theatre visits or international travel), and experiences of discrimination and exclusion are part of their everyday lives. Many are politically disengaged or feel that politics and Europe are irrelevant to them. The project addresses these challenges in several ways: • Theatre work strengthens creativity, self-confidence, and teamwork. • Stage experience enhances self-presentation – a key competence, also valuable in job interviews. • Intercultural exchange broadens horizons and offers direct experiences of Europe. • Thematic work on Europe and its values builds awareness of the importance of participation and civic rights. • The participants feel empowered to put their own ideas into practice and to take responsibility in societ By developing and performing a theatre play together, the participants gain recognition, experience community, and encounter Europe as a lived reality.
