As humanity faces unprecedented environmental challenges and growing polarization in many societies, the need for approaches that combine ecological sustainability with social cohesion becomes increasingly urgent. Environmental peacebuilding recognizes that environmental challenges and social conflicts are deeply intertwined. Environmental challenges often become sources of conflict rather than cooperation in local communities. Different views on environmental protection, resource management, and climate action can create deep divisions, particularly in communities already experiencing social or economic tensions. In our understanding, environmental peacebuilding aims at reshaping our relationship with both nature and each other, to find ways to transform environmental challenges into opportunities for community building and peaceful cooperation. Young people, being most affected by environmental degradation play a crucial role in transforming environmental challenges into opportunities for social cohesion. However, studies indicate that environmental concerns are a major source of stress and anxiety among youth, with many of them feeling overwhelmed by the scale of ecological challenges and conflicting approaches to addressing them. This manifests in eco-anxiety about climate change, social polarization around environmental issues, and a decreased sense of agency in addressing these challenges. Under these circumstances, it becomes crucial to equip young people with the competences needed to serve as environmental peacebuilders in their communities. This is particularly important as young people have the potential to bridge divides and create innovative solutions that address both environmental and social challenges. Their capacity to influence positive change often begins with understanding the interconnections between environmental and social issues, combined with the practical skills to facilitate dialogue and cooperation around these themes. While working on environmental youth activism and community development, our project partners have observed that young people need both environmental competencies and peacebuilding skills to be effective agents of change. They must be able to create inclusive environmental initiatives and action while simultaneously building trust and understanding across divided communities. Youth workers play a vital role in helping young people gaining both environmental competencies and social skills, helping young people become environmental activists in their communities. Therefore, youth workers must be equipped with the right methodologies and approaches to support young people in becoming environmental peacebuilders. Specifically, youth workers need to be able to facilitate nature connection experiences that build empathy and understanding, guide young people in navigating environmental conflicts constructively, and support youth-led community organising that combine environmental protection with community building. Consequently, the project aims to strengthen the capacities of civil society organisations to empower young people to lead and engage in environmental peacebuilding at the community level across Europe. This will be achieved through two distinct objectives: - To foster competence development of youth workers and young community leaders in empowering and supporting young people in community organizing for environmental sustainability in their community - To strengthen local and transnational initiatives and partnerships for youth-driven environmental peacebuilding The project aims to address the following needs to enhance youth work practices of the partner organisations and beyond: - Develop youth work practitioners’ competencies in understanding the links between environmental challenges and social conflicts - Build capacity in using nature-based approaches for community building and conflict transformation - Enhance skills in designing and implementing educational activities that combine environmental and peace-building elements - Develop competences and practices for youth-led community organising - Exchange best practices in using environmental initiatives for youth driven community organising - Create opportunities for international collaboration on environmental peacebuilding projects - Strengthen organizational capacity to support youth-led environmental initiatives that build social cohesion
