Objectives

Europe and its neighbourhood have been facing a series of challenges, from war and political polarization to the rise of right-wing ideologies and unrest in several countries. The Russian war against Ukraine has further deepened divisions, fueling hatred and reinforcing stereotypes about different groups of people. In this context, promoting intercultural dialogue has become more crucial than ever. Europe is home to a diverse population with various cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds, and peace education plays a key role in helping young people understand and appreciate these differences. By fostering dialogue, we aim to strengthen social cohesion and counteract narratives of division. With ongoing violent conflicts, increasing polarization, and social tensions across Europe, there is an urgent demand for initiatives that equip young people with the knowledge and tools to build peace within their communities. Many young people lack access to structured education on conflict transformation, emotional literacy, and intercultural dialogue, leaving them unprepared to address tensions in their environments. Therefore, there is a big need to fulfil that gap and offer young people space where they can learn about peace education and essential peacebuilding tools. Furthermore, peace education is essential for building stability in Europe and preparing the next generation to be active, responsible citizens. Young people, in particular, have been deeply affected by recent violent conflicts and need the skills to navigate and transform tensions in their communities. The importance of youth participation in peace processes has been emphasised globally, including in the UN Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace, and Security. At the European level, the Council of Europe recognised this need by organizing a consultative meeting on peace education in 2023, preparing a visibility study in 2024 and currently working on a recommendation on Peace Education in Non-formal learning and Youth work for political bodies. The conclusions from these efforts highlighted the urgent necessity to provide young people with structured spaces to explore peace education and peacebuilding, primarily through educational initiatives and grassroots engagement. In response to all these needs and recommendations, within Youth Peace Ambassadors Network, Peace Up! And partnership, decided to create the training course "Essentials", fully dedicated to equipping youth workers with essential tools for peacebuilding Aim: to empower 24 youth workers, leaders, activists, and trainers with the competencies needed to foster peace at personal, interpersonal, and community levels and become peace multipliers capable of spreading a culture of peace from the grassroots level.
