Objectives

The combined effects of climate change, unsustainable farming practices and the spread of diseases like Xylella fastidiosa are undermining the environmental health of olive groves, which play a crucial role in preventing soil erosion, maintaining biodiversity and supporting water retention. At the same time, the economic challenges posed by these factors are placing immense pressure on local economies. Olive farming, essential to the livelihood of millions of people in the Mediterranean, is facing increasing production costs, reduced yields and economic instability. Addressing these challenges requires the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices that reduce environmental impacts while enhancing the resilience of olive farming. Sustainable practices such as water-efficient irrigation, organic farming and integrated pest management are essential in ensuring the long-term viability of olive cultivation. Integrating these practices within the framework of a circular economy, where resources are used more efficiently and waste is minimized, will be critical for ensuring economic viability in rural communities. The project aims: Objective: O-live – European Values and Citizenship To raise awareness among 35 young people from 5 countries about the role of olive cultivation in promoting European values like sustainability, solidarity and active citizenship through field activities and collaborative learning, intercultural dialogue and community engagement. Objective: Terrestrial Roots – Cultural Heritage & Intercultural Dialogue To foster intercultural dialogue and understanding among young people from different countries by exploring the cultural and historical significance of olive cultivation, sharing traditions and engaging participants in activities that promote the preservation of cultural heritage linked to olives, culminating in the organisation of a public event to disseminate the outcomes of the exchange. Objective: Sustainability and Climate Change To empower 35 participants with soft skills regarding sustainable olive farming, including climate change adaptation, circular economy and permaculture principles, through hands-on activities and workshops during 9 activity days based on non-formal education methods to ensure practical learning, and personal and community development for long-term resilience. Objective: Local community and European community During the project at least 5 OliVideos will be created to promote and a public event in the local community to engage and promote the learning on the project in the local community and in Europe. By this, we believe that the project will put some roots in creating sustainable communities.
