Objectives

The implementation of “Our Jobs are on Fire” is guided by the desire to strengthen youth work practice by equipping young people with essential soft skills that are directly linked to employability, personal development, and active citizenship. The project takes place in a rural context, Paramythia, where opportunities for young people are often limited, and it builds on the belief that youth work can provide practical, transformative learning experiences that formal education alone does not always offer. From the perspective of youth work practice, the first objective is to empower young people to recognise, develop, and apply soft skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, communication, and critical thinking. In youth work, these competences are not taught in classrooms but experienced through non-formal education methods—role plays, simulations, group challenges, and intercultural activities. By embedding these tools in the project, youth workers demonstrate how experiential learning can become a bridge between personal growth and the labour market. A second objective is to promote inclusion and equal opportunities in youth work. The project intentionally brings together participants from diverse backgrounds, including those from rural areas and fewer opportunities, and provides a safe, supportive environment where they can work together as equals. For youth workers, this exchange serves as a model of inclusive practice, showing how international mobility can reduce inequalities by giving all young people access to intercultural and competence-based learning. The project also aims to strengthen the role of youth work as a catalyst for employability. Youth workers often face the challenge of proving the value of non-formal education to employers and policymakers. Through this project, the connection between soft skills and the labour market will be made visible, giving youth work greater recognition as a field that prepares young people not only for personal development but also for professional integration. Another key objective is to foster intercultural dialogue and European identity through youth work. By living and learning together in Paramythia, participants from Greece, Türkiye, Portugal, and the Czech Republic will experience diversity in practice, breaking stereotypes and developing openness, empathy, and cooperation. This is central to youth work practice, which values intercultural exchange as a means of building solidarity and European citizenship. Finally, the project aims to strengthen the capacity of youth organisations. By working together in a structured partnership, sharing tools, and co-developing activities, youth workers from all four organisations will expand their competences in planning, facilitation, and evaluation. This builds organisational capacity and contributes to the professionalisation of youth work, ensuring that the benefits of the project extend beyond the single mobility. In summary, the objectives of “Our Jobs are on Fire” from a youth work perspective are to: – Develop young people’s soft skills through non-formal learning. – Model inclusive youth work practices that engage young people with fewer opportunities. – Strengthen the recognition of youth work as a pathway to employability. – Promote intercultural learning and European values. – Enhance the competences of youth workers and organisations for future activities. Through these objectives, the project demonstrates how youth work can respond effectively to young people’s needs while also contributing to broader social and labour market challenges.
