Objectives

History on a Plate is about uniting young people and immigrant communities by sharing stories, traditions and tasting different typical food. Its main aim is to use food as a powerful tool for intercultural dialogue, youth empowerment and reflection on migration and identity, while fostering key competences among young people through non-formal education. Through simple conversations with the immigrant community of Athens, participants will get to know the people behind the word “immigrant”, their journeys, challenges, and the culture they carry with them. Together, participants will give a voice to these people by creating podcasts. By the end of the project, they won’t just have new skills in storytelling, digital media, and teamwork, they will have a deeper understanding of migration as a human journey, and a shared sense of connection they can take back to their own communities. The project is rooted in the principles of youth work practice: inclusion, participation, creativity and learning by doing. We want to create a safe and engaging space where young people from different cultural and national backgrounds can connect, learn from each other, and share stories that matter. The objectives of the project are: 1. To promote intercultural understanding and solidarity among young people by exploring migration histories through traditional food practices. By sharing personal or family recipes and the stories behind them, participants develop empathy and appreciation for different cultures and life experiences. 2. To empower young people to express themselves and tell their stories through creative media such as digital storytelling, podcasting and collaborative writing. These methods will help them build their communication, digital, and creative skills, core competences for active participation in society and the job market. 3. To encourage active participation and peer learning by placing young people at the center of the project. They will lead workshops, conduct interviews, contribute to project outputs, and take part in dissemination activities. 4. To raise awareness about migration, identity and inclusion in youth work by equipping both participants and youth workers with practical tools and methodologies that connect food with storytelling and intercultural education. The digital recipe book and podcast series will serve as long-lasting educational resources that can be used in youth centers, schools and intercultural training sessions. Erasmus+ Youth Exchange “History on a Plate” “History on a Plate” demonstrates how youth work can creatively and meaningfully engage young people in exploring complex social themes like migration, identity and inclusion. By combining food, storytelling, and non-formal learning methods, the project offers an inclusive platform where participants feel empowered to share their personal and cultural experiences. This not only strengthens their confidence and sense of belonging but also encourages empathy and connection among their peers. Giving voice to immigrants -especially young ones- is essential because it challenges stereotypes, humanizes migration and brings forward diverse perspectives often left unheard. Through their stories, shared in the form of recipes and personal narratives, immigrants contribute to a richer, more inclusive understanding of our shared social and cultural landscapes. This project ensures their voices are not only heard but celebrated.
