Objectives

This project aims to hold space for something often overlooked: the emotional and psychological reality of growing up online. While media literacy is typically approached through a technical or academic lens, we believe it must also be treated as a question of emotional wellbeing, equity, and identity. Young people today are navigating a digital landscape that is fast, fragmented, and often overwhelming. The average European teenager spends over 5 hours per day online (EU Kids Online 2020), while 1 in 3 youth report feeling anxious, inadequate, or left behind because of what they see online. Much of this is driven by the FOMO effect, a chronic emotional tension caused by the fear of missing out, falling behind, or being excluded. Our goal is not only to increase participants’ digital literacy, but to empower them to reclaim agency over their time, attention, and emotional space. We want them to see their media habits as something they can shape — rather than be shaped by. Through the language and methods of youth work, this project will support participants to: Understand how algorithms, content overload, and social comparison affect their emotional and mental states Reflect on their own digital footprints, patterns, and vulnerabilities Strengthen skills like critical thinking, emotional regulation, and digital citizenship Connect with others across cultures who share these struggles, and co-create solutions rooted in creativity, empathy, and care This is youth work for the digital generation, playful, reflective, and rooted in belonging. Our objective is to introduce media literacy not as an academic subject, but as a practical, emotional, and creative life skill. Through carefully designed activities rooted in non-formal education, we aim to help participants better understand their digital habits, develop emotional awareness, strengthen their digital citizenship, and explore how media consumption affects their mental wellbeing and the environment. For us, youth work is about creating moments of insight, empathy, and transformation and this project will do just that.
