Democracy is a living system that thrives on participation, dialogue, and the inclusion of diverse voices. Yet, in today’s world, many young people perceive democracy as either distant or broken. On one hand, there is apathy: a sense that “my voice doesn’t matter,” which leads to disengagement and indifference. On the other hand, there is polarisation: a belief that “only my side counts,” which fuels division, intolerance, and conflicts in societies. The InCommon Youth Exchange seeks to confront these challenges head-on by offering young people a space to play with democracy, question its limitations, and reimagine it as a creative, inclusive, and participatory practice. This project positions young people not merely as beneficiaries but as active co-creators, capable of designing democratic processes, tools, and narratives that can transform their communities and their understanding of civic life. The core idea behind InCommon is that democracy is not just about institutions, voting, or formal politics. It is about shared creativity, dialogue, respect, and the ability to include multiple voices in decision-making. Democracy flourishes when young people feel confident in their capacity to contribute, when they see their stories valued, and when they experience the power of collaborative problem-solving. By engaging participants in hands-on, creative activities, the project transforms abstract democratic principles into tangible experiences. This approach aligns closely with contemporary youth work practice, which emphasizes empowerment, experiential learning, intercultural dialogue, and social inclusion. Through InCommon, participants will explore democracy as a practice, experiment with its boundaries, and develop tools to make it more relevant and accessible in their daily lives. The project will bring together six partner countries Spain, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Italy, and Denmark – with six participants per country, including two young people with fewer opportunities. Participants will be aged 18 to 26, and each group will be accompanied by a group leader. The venue, Las Rozas near Madrid, provides a stimulating environment for collaborative learning, creativity, and intercultural exchange. Over eight days, six activity days and two travel days, participants will engage in a series of innovative and interlinked activities designed to combine critical thinking, artistic expression, and democratic experimentation. Each activity is carefully designed to maximize engagement, encourage reflection, and produce tangible outputs that can continue to influence communities long after the youth exchange ends. Project Objectives: - To engage young people in creative re-imaginings of democracy as an inclusive practice. - To improve youth confidence in their ability to participate in democratic life. - To support intercultural dialogue by bringing together diverse perspectives on democracy. - To promote inclusive tools that amplify voices often ignored by traditional institutions. - To strengthen cooperation and critical thinking as alternatives to apathy and polarisation. - To develop innovative outputs (cards, archives, games, artworks) for long-term use in communities. - To encourage active citizenship and democratic values in line with Erasmus+ priorities. - To inspire youth to view democracy not only as institutions, but as shared creativity, respect, and dialogue. - To share information about Erasmus+ opportunities that can help participants in their future projects.
