Objectives

In recent years, youth work has undergone a profound transformation. What used to be mainly linked to physical spaces for leisure, training and socialisation is now permeated by a new scenario: social media. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Facebook are now the main channels of communication, information and reference for most teenagers and young people. From the outside, it might seem that social media consumption is a light-hearted, almost automatic activity, but those of us who work with young people know that this is not the case. Social media is a powerful force, capable of influencing the self-esteem, expectations and relationships of millions of young people. However, its potential is not always used constructively: we find a constant flow of fake news, hate speech, racism, unrealistic body comparisons and unattainable lifestyles. All of this fuels frustration, insecurity and disorientation in young people, distancing them from the values we consider essential: inclusion, diversity, solidarity, sustainability and citizen participation. At Yellow Kaktus, we have clearly identified this need: youth workers, both established and those in training, need specific digital tools that enable them to transform this landscape. If the message of social media is so powerful, we must learn to use it for positive and educational purposes, turning youth workers into true ‘positive influencers’. The ‘Influencers without Borders’ project was born precisely from this motivation. We want to train our youth workers to learn how to create and disseminate digital content that inspires and educates, using the language of young people: reels, posts, podcasts and viral campaigns. We want each participant to become a role model in their community, capable of counteracting harmful messages and instead conveying constructive narratives that reflect the values we share within the Erasmus+ programme. In this way, Yellow Kaktus not only aims to strengthen the skills of its own teams, but also to contribute to the creation of an international network of youth workers, ‘influencers without borders’, who can spread a clear signal of change in the use of social media throughout Europe. A movement that allows us, together, to restore social media to its best function: to be a space for meeting, inclusion and shared growth.
